Professional football player Spencer Larsen will address a group of Summerville High School students Friday morning.
Larsen, a fullback for the Denver Broncos who saw action as a linebacker early in his pro career, will deliver a message about the importance of education and values and host a question and answer session with students. The event, which is being sponsored by the SHS PTSA, will be held in the SHS auditorium and will be open to the public unless students claim all of the limited number of tickets available.
“We had been searching for someone who could come in to motivate and inspire our students but we found we couldn’t really afford the type of person we were looking for,” SHS PTSA President Tanya Robinson said. “Then Mr. Larsen just kind of fell into our lap. It’s such a blessing and I’m so glad he agreed to do it. He is very down to earth and realizes how fortunate he is to be able to do what he does. He is a great person to have talk to our athletes.”
Larsen and his wife are friends with Robinson’s daughter, Kayla Hall. She found out her friends were planning a trip to Charleston so she approached them with the idea of Larsen being a guest speaker at SHS.
“It would be a shame to have someone like him in town and not take advantage of it,” Robinson said. “My daughter new professional ball players often donate their time for things such as this so she didn’t mind asking. He said he would be happy to, but warned us that the students would probably want to hear more about his teammate than him. He said he is fine with that too.”
Larsen is the Bronco who caught QB sensation Tim Tebow’s first NFL touchdown pass in 2010.
Green Wave athletes get first dibs on the tickets, which are free. Then the rest of the student body will have the opportunity to get tickets and any that remain will be made available to the general public at the school’s student information booth beginning Thursday morning.
