The Green Wave boys overcame a slow start Friday to earn their second win of the season over Colleton County.
Summerville earned a 45-30 win over the Cougars at home to improve to 11-9 on the season with a 5-0 mark in region play. Colleton fell to 9-13, 0-5.
Summerville was paced by senior J.D. Tucker, who posted a game-high 17 points. Brandon Wilkerson and Edreone Brockington both added 12 points for the Wave.
“The first half we set a 2-3 zone and it was a low-position game and we couldn’t really get any shots going,” Summerville coach Greg Elliott said. “We got it to 21-21 at the half and then in the third quarter we got some long rebounds and were able to get out in transition and make them play some man-to-man. Brandon had some big rebounds and saved us from some missed layups and Colleton got into foul trouble in the second half and I think that was big.”
Colleton scored in the paint early to jump out to a 7-0 lead. Then Tucker hit a pair of shots, including a three-pointer, and Brockington scored on a break to tie the game. However, the Cougars pulled back ahead to lead 13-9 entering the second period.
Summerville gained a 21-17 lead, but Colleton then tied the game just before the half.
Summerville opened the third period with a mixture of shots and took a 30-23 lead with a basket on a break halfway through the period. The play seemed to take the wind out of the Cougars’ sails and Summerville entered the final period up 32-25. Then the Wave defense only surrendered five points in the fourth.
In other boys’ basketball action, Fort Dorchester (14-7) lost to James Island (15-6) on a Trojan shot with three seconds left in overtime. Rodney Gibbs and Troy Bryant both had 18 points for the Fort and Chris Rouse had 16. However, K.J. Smith scored 21 for the Trojans and Justin Bolus added 11.
Ashley Ridge fell 53-51 to Beaufort in overtime. Fred Weeks led the Swamp Foxes with 18 points and Romelo Doctor added 15 as Ashley Ridge fell to 1-4 in region play. Beaufort improved its region standing to 4-1.
