Jordan Stovall’s grand slam in the third inning May 20 gave Mauldin all the cushion it needed to clinch the South Carolina Class AAAA softball championship.
Mauldin (28-3) went up 1-0 over Summerville (29-7) in the top of the first inning off a solo homerun by Dana Lander. The Mavericks then took a 5-0 lead off Stovall’s bases-loaded homer and held on for a 6-3 victory that was the team’s second in a best-of-three series with the Green Wave.
“We’ve been hitting the ball well,” Mauldin coach Joseph Terry said. “We scored 10 runs on them Tuesday, but didn’t really hit the ball hard. We placed it real well and did some good things. Then they made a few mistakes that allowed us to extend the lead. Tonight we didn’t score as much, but we hit the ball a lot harder. We hit it right to people at times, but that’s just the breaks.”
It wasn’t the ending Summerville was looking for, but Green Wave coach Heather Tucker says there’s nothing for her players to hang their heads about.
“If you consider all the teams in this state, to finish second is a good season,” she said. “We would rather be first, but it’s tough just to get here so to make it this far is a great accomplishment. I’m proud of how our girls played. We only have two seniors on the team this year so we have a good group of young kids that we can build on and hopefully continue to have this caliber of play.”
This year marks the first time Summerville has advanced to the state softball finals. Mauldin hasn’t won a state softball title since 1982, when it was a Class AAA school.
The Mavericks tallied 10 hits in the game while holding the Wave to seven. Senior Ashley Bagwell went the distance in the circle to improve her pitching record to 27-3.
“She’s been very good for five years,” Terry said of his ace. “Every time they scored a run tonight, she slammed the door on them to prevent them from getting closer and she has done that her whole career.”
Summerville’s Malori Myers suffered the loss. Catcher Kaitlyn Clark led the Wave at the plate, going 2-for-4 and driving in all three Summerville runs. Shortstop Ashley Muckelvaney was also 2-for-4.
Summerville scored its first run in the bottom of the third. Kasie Fowler reached on a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Tricia Sizeemore. She then scored on a single by Clark.
In the fifth, Sizemore reached on a double, moved to third on a bunt single by Muckelvaney and scored on a groundout by Clark.
Muckelvaney opened the bottom of the seventh with a double and then scored on a double by Clark for the 6-3 score.
