Pinewood’s football season ended as it began.

The Panthers opened their season with a 26-7 thumping at the hands of Hammond School. Friday night in Columbia, the Skyhawks took little more than six minutes in the first quarter to close the door in the rematch.  The 35-13 loss in the opening round of the playoffs dropped Pinewood to 4-7 and elevated Hammond to 10-1.

“I was sorry to see the season end this way,” said Pinewood coach Pinky Guerard. “I felt we were in most of the games and the season could have gone either way.  We had a great group of seniors who I’ll miss as they move on to the next phase of their lives.”

Any suspense as to the outcome of the contest was quickly laid to rest. Hammond returned the opening kick to the Pinewood 11-yard line. Moments later, BJ Bennett ran it over from the 4.  The kick was good and Hammond led before many of the fans had taken their seats.

On the Panthers’ first possession, Pinewood was unable to move and punted.  Hammond moved quickly into Panther territory where quarterback David Nidiffer found Aaron Walters for a 35-yard TD pass. With eight and a half minutes remaining in the first quarter, Pinewood found itself looking at a deficit of 14-0.

Once again, Pinewood was unable to gain a first down and punted. Hunter George latched onto the bouncing ball on his own 15 and before you could say 21-zip, it was 21-zip.

The Panther defense began to come alive on Hammond’s fourth possession, forcing the first Skyhawk punt of the evening. The Panther offense, however, couldn’t move the ball.  A disastrous first quarter ended with Hammond sitting on what would prove to be an insurmountable 21-0 lead.

Hammond entered the second period with undiminished enthusiasm. With just more than a minute gone, BJ Bennett scored the second of his three touchdowns on a 10-yard carry.

The Panthers now began to show some life on offense. Freshman quarterback Bobby Casey began to click.  With growing confidence he led the team downfield with passes to Bruce Haynes and Cameron Fisher.  The Skyhawks held and forced a punt but Pinewood fans got to see a glimpse of the future.

Hammond drove out to midfield where Will Rogers recovered a fumble for Pinewood with only 38 seconds left in the first half.  Skillfully working the clock, Casey passed to Michael Pendley at the 22 and then hit Haynes on the goal line for the touchdown with 18 seconds left in the half.  Thomas Ferro converted and the score was 28-7.

The second half opened with unsuccessful drives by both teams.  Pinewood then commenced to put together its best drive of the evening.  With a 43-yard run by Moses Richardson as the centerpiece, Pinewood moved to the Skyhawk six.  Casey then hit Josh Glenn for the score.  The Skyhawks blocked the extra point and the score, with 3:35 left in the third, was 28-13.

The Panther defense held the Skyhawks on the ensuing drive and took over on downs at their own 15.  They moved the ball down to the Skyhawks’ 29 where George picked off a pass.

Playing a methodical ball-control offense, the Skyhawks kept the Panther offense off the field until deep into the fourth quarter. They scored their final touchdown with under two minutes left in the game.  The game and the Pinewood season ended with the score 35-13.

Richardson led the Panthers in rushing with ten carries for 64 yards.  Damien Simmons had a single carry for 16 yards and Morgan had four for 13.

Bobby Casey, in his first start, completed 15 passes of 32 attempts for 151 yards with two touchdowns.  He was intercepted twice.

Bruce Haynes had eight catches for 63 yards and a score.  Pendley caught two for 33 yards and Glenn had three for 33 and a touchdown.  Cameron Fisher caught one pass for 24 yards.

On defense, Ethan Gaskins led with 14 tackles, 10 of them solo. Simmons had 10 tackles, eight solo, and Rogers recovered a fumble.  Lucas Clark did a solid job for the Panthers at defensive end.

Gaskins led the team in tackles for the season with 122, followed by Simmons and Chris Morgan.
