Things seem to be coming together for the Ashley Ridge girls’ soccer team.

Last week, the Lady Swamp Foxes handed Cane Bay a 9-0 loss.

The team got off to a bit of a slow start this season, but improved to 5-2 in Region 6-AA with the win.

That puts them in second place behind top ranked Bishop England.

“We’ve been progressing well,” Ashley Ridge coach Mark Weaver said. “Over the last three weeks, we have really come together as a team. We had a lot of individuals starting off just because we are a new school with only freshmen and sophomores, but our teamwork is showing now. They are having a better time; coaching has improved; and we are winning games.”

Freshman Sydney Waterhouse led the way for the Foxes Tuesday, scoring three goals.

Kat Blanchard, Brittany McNally and Rachel Wall all scored twice as the Foxes controlled ball possession throughout the game.

Ashley Ridge took a 3-0 lead into the half and then Waterhouse scored two goals early in the second period to put the game out of reach for Cane Bay, the other new AA high school in the Lowcountry.

The Fighting Cobras are in search of their second win in the region.

Sophomore Nancy Lazo made a few nice drives to the goal for the Cobras, but the Swamp Foxes fended each off.

Other than that, it was a pretty quiet evening for Jessie Coker, who has done most of the work in goal for Ashley Ridge in its four shutouts this season.

Weaver is hoping his team can build on the success it has had the last few weeks.

“We are a work in progress and I’m so excited about the next two years,” he said. “Our JV team played well tonight and I am ready to get some of those girls on our varsity team.”
