For the second time this season, the Ashley Ridge girls gave the Lady Green Wave all it could handle, but came up short on the scoreboard.
The first time the teams met, the Lady Swamp Foxes had a chance to tie the game in the closing seconds but couldn’t get off the shot they needed. In the second meeting Tuesday, Ashley Ridge forced the tie, but lost 51-50 in overtime.
“This was an important game for us,” Summerville coach Matt Legare said. “Despite some inconsistent execution for 32 minutes, it was encouraging to see girls make huge plays and big-time defensive stops in high-pressure situations. We knew this was a must win in terms of accomplishing some season goals, and the girls refused to lose. Just like last time we met, I have to congratulate both teams on representing the town so well.”
Summerville set a fast pace from the tipoff, taking advantage of some breaks and open shots to take an 11-2 lead into the second period. The Wave held an 18-11 lead at the half.
Then Ashley Ridge guard Jasmine Clark found her second wind and scored 12 of her game-high 23 points in the third period to lift the Foxes to a 30-27 lead entering the fourth.
With a pair of three-point shots from freshman Ashley Green and a pair of free throws from sophomore Kwanza Murray, Summerville took a one-point lead roughly halfway through the period. However, Ashley Ridge continued to fight and took a five-point lead off a 3 from Clark with just more than three minutes remaining in regulation. Then Murray made three free throws down the stretch to tie the game at 41 and force overtime.
The final four minutes was a back-and-fourth affair.
With just more than a minute remaining in the extra period, Brenna Swartz made a steal and bucket on a break to put Ashley Ridge up 50-49. Tinara Brown then forced a turnover that led to a Murray free throw that cut the lead to a point. Shacoya Smith followed that with a steal and bucket on a break that put Summerville up 51-50 with nine seconds remaining. Clark quickly moved the ball up court and Ashley Ridge got a shot off, but it bounced off the rim and the Foxes ran out of time.
Green had three, three-point shots on the night and led the Summerville scorers with 19 points. Sarah Montei added 11 and Murray finished with nine. For the Foxes, Shelby Daly added 11 points to Clark’s 23 and Michala Green finished with eight.
With the win, Summerville improved to 14-5 on the season with a 4-2 mark in region play and looks to clinch the region’s No. 2 playoff seed with wins in its final two region games of the season. Ashley Ridge dropped to 11-9, 3-3 and is eyeing the No. 3 seed.
