The Lady Green Wave won the latest round in its fight with the Lady Warriors.
The Summerville girls’ basketball team earned a 48-40 win Tuesday over Wando, a team that for the last few seasons has had Summerville’s number. The teams had already met twice this season and split, with Summerville winning on Dec. 13 and Wando handing the Wave its first loss of the season during the Teresa Kendle Holiday Tournament.
“Wando has always been a good team that has beaten us many times in the past,” Wave senior Sarah Montei said. “We came into the game determined to prove to everyone that the Green Wave program has turned around and that we deserve respect. Our hard work and determination helped us get that monkey off our back and gave us a positive mindset heading into the playoffs.”
Montei paved the way for Summerville, scoring a game-high 20 points. Tinara Brown contributed eight points and both Ashley Green and Kwanza Murray chipped in seven. Tinsley Hallman led Wando with 19 points.
The Wave took a 28-18 lead at the half, mainly through good pressure defense and some big shots by Montei. Hallman heated up for Wando in the second half, but Summerville was able to hold off a Warrior run and maintain the lead in part because of solid rebounding.
“Our post players did a good job on the boards in the final two periods.” Summerville coach Matt Legare said. “Also, our guards kept their poise through Wando’s trapping defense and we continued to play good team defense.”
Wando cut the lead to four points with about two minutes remaining, but Montei, Green, and Brown all made clutch free throws in the final minutes.
Summerville improved to 16-5 with the win and remains at 5-2 in region play with just one regular-season game remaining. The Wave travels to Fort Dorchester Friday. Wando dropped to 12-10 on the season.
In other girls’ basketball action, Fort Dorchester fell 45-34 to Beaufort. Emani Gray led all scorers with 18 points and Ebony Watson added 11 for Beaufort. Brianna Chisolm led the Lady Patriots with 11 points while Leah Robinson, Randi Chandler and London Sharper all added six points.
Neither the Patriots nor the Eagles will make the playoffs this season.
