Lady Panthers open season
The Pinewood varsity girls’ basketball team opened its 2012-2013 season with a convincing win over Heathwood Hall last week.
The Lady Panthers defeated The Highlanders 61-33. The first quarter was fairly evenly matched with Pinewood taking a slight 15-10 lead.
In the second and third quarters Pinewood took the game way out of reach by posting 32 points to Heathwood Halls’ 13.
The leading scorers for Pinewood were Bri Boyd with 14 and Jenifer Rhodes with 11.
Pinewood coach Nancy Beatty was pleased with the outcome.
“I was very happy with how we played as a team,” Beatty said. “We defended well and we ran the floor well.”
The Lady Panthers were also in action over the weekend at The Baron Classic at Wilson Hall in Sumter.
On Friday Pinewood defeated Wilson Hall 49-17. The moment the game started it was obvious Wilson Hall was outmatched.
The Lady Panthers took the lead and never looked back, playing a fast-paced, no-nonsense game. The whole squad saw considerable playing time with no impact on the momentum of the game. They were able to hold the Barons while putting points on the scoreboard.
On Saturday the Lady Panthers beat Palmetto Christian 55-32. After Rhodes won the tip off, the ball went to Raygon Hendrix who passed to Maria Corella who then laid it up to score in the first three seconds. The game slowed a little after that with shots not dropping and fouls being made.
It looked like the Lady Panthers didn't expect the quality of play the Palmetto Christians brought to the table and after two lead changes, the Panthers finished up the first quarter leading 16-15. The Panthers stepped it up after that and never lost the lead again. Pinewood ended the half at 27-19.
The Panthers turned up the speed, pace and performance in the second half and took control. It wasn't the Lady Panthers best performance, but it did reflect their mental toughness and focus.
