The Ashley Ridge girls’ basketball team rallied Tuesday, but didn’t finish strong enough to upset Colleton County.

The Lady Cougars earned a 54-45 win over the Lady Swamp Foxes, but not without a scare. Colleton entered the game as the Region 8-AAAA leader while Ashley Ridge is the region’s third-place team.

“We didn’t play that well in the first half, but I’m proud of the way we played in the second half,” Ashley Ridge coach Chi-Chi Hurley said. “We fought hard in the fourth period to hang in there against a good team.”

Colleton took a 32-17 lead into the half and a 41-29 lead into the final period. Then Ashley Ridge made a push to cut the lead down to three with just under two minutes remaining. But hit six free throws in the closing seconds to put the game away.

Colleton’s Kayla Reed-Blake led all scorers with 15 points while Deyja Brown, Briana Chisolm and Thea Campbell also scored in double digits. Jasmine Clark, with 12 points, and Aasima Walker, with 11, led Ashley Ridge.

The Foxes finished the regular season with an 11-10 record and a 4-4 mark in region play. They open the playoffs Tuesday at Lexington.
