Lady Swamp Foxes triumph in first meeting with Bluffton
Things went well for the Lady Swamp Fox basketball team during its first meeting with Region 8-AAAA’s newest member.
Ashley Ridge (6-5) handed Bluffton a 35-22 loss Tuesday in the region opener for both teams.
“We played well defensively which is always key for us,” Ashley Ridge coach Chris Shaw said. “We were looking to get off to a 1-0 start in region so I was pleased with the overall effort.”
Shelby Daly and Ashley Tierney paced the Lady Swamp Foxes. Daly finished with a game-high 14 points while Tierney finished with 12. Tiffany Banks led the Lady Bobcats with 11 points.
Bluffton had a good enough start in the game but things started to turn south for the Lady Bobcats late in the opening period when Daly hit a three-pointer to give Ashley Ridge a 10-6 lead entering the second period. Bluffton got back on track, limiting Ashley Ridge to only three scores in the second and trailed by six points at the half.
But the Lady Swamp Foxes put the game away in the third. With Bluffton keying on Daly, Tierney made three baskets in the paint and hit a jumper in the period. Olivia Baum also converted a steal into a basket and Ashley Ridge took a 26-12 lead into the final stanza.
Ariel Glover stepped up for the Lady Swamp Foxes in the fourth, scoring six points in the final eight minutes.
Shaw wasn’t named the Ashley Ridge coach until late in the year so the Lady Swamp Foxes didn’t participate in any holiday tournaments this season. But if Tuesday’s performance is any indication the team isn’t rusty.
“Although we didn’t play, that doesn’t mean we didn’t work,” Shaw said. “We were in the gym a lot doing a lot of post work and a lot of guard work. We understand we have to keep working hard every day.”
Ashley Ridge travels to Fort Dorchester Jan. 11 and to Beaufort Jan. 15 before returning home to host Summerville for another key region game Jan. 18.
