De’Angelo Henderson
The MVP award for the Green Wave football team went to the guy who racked up 114 points over the course of the 2009 season.

Junior running back De’Angelo Henderson received the team’s top honor Jan. 28 during the Summerville High School Green Wave Football Banquet. Henderson accepted the award from assistant coach Joe Call, who offered high praise for the team’s featured back.

“De’Angelo is so good that I believe he will be in our hall of fame one day,” Call said. “He is the energy of this team. You know every time he touches the ball, he is going to make something happen and he may take it to the house.”

Henderson, who was also named the 2009 All-County Line Offensive Player of the Year for Dorchester County, rushed for 1,567 yards and 15 touchdowns. He made 19 receptions for 237 yards and four TDs. He also passed for a TD.

His numbers would be even more impressive had he not missed three games of the season. But rather than dwell on what could have been, he is focusing on what can be.

“I’m going to work 10 times as hard next season to make sure I do my best,” Henderson said. “We want to win it all next year. Our offensive line is working out hard and I’ve got faith in them. I’m confident about next year.”

The banquet is held annually to honor football players and cheerleaders for their athletic and academic accomplishments.
