Linemen carry on tradition

Green Wave linemen and their quarterback carry on the Thursday evening tradition.
A Green Wave tradition seems to be paying off.

The starters on the Summerville offensive line, and their quarterback, are carrying on the tradition of getting together for dinner every Thursday night during the football season.

The dinners date back at least four years, when the family of Wave QB Reid McCollum hosted as a way of thanking the linemen for the protection they provided McCollum every Friday night.

When McCollum graduated, the family of QB Donny McElveen became the host.

When he graduated last year, Marcie Wagers volunteered to host at her house.

“It’s a neat ritual so everyone wanted to keep it going and I like to cook,” Wagers, the mother of Wave center Devin Taylor, said. “It’s just something fun for them to do.”

Current Wave QB Dalton Saunders said he is glad the tradition has continued because it has given him a chance to get to know some of his teammates better. The linemen say it has helped them bond.

“If we’re confused during a play, things usually don’t workout for the best,” guard Corley Bridges said. “We need to know what the other linemen are going to do and its important for us to have good chemistry because if the line messes up it can throw off the entire offense. The dinners bring us together. We talk about the game and what we need to do, but mostly it’s just a chance for us to hang out.”

The dinners are typically the last big meal the athletes have before a game, so the Wagers make sure the players get ample carbs and nutrients.

The main course varies, but there is always plenty to go around.

On BBQ night, the Wagers got 10 pounds of meat and large portions of the fixings.

Another evening they baked four turkey breasts, two family size bags of corn and four boxes of stuffing.

Penn Wagers, Taylor’s stepfather, said the group doesn’t get steak until the Wave wins its first playoff game. If the Wave advances to the championship game, he has promised them a Lowcountry boil.

After dinner, the group usually either watches college football or plays video games.

“It’s a time to relax after a week of practice and preparing for Friday,” Taylor said. “Though we have some pretty heated Madden tournaments.”

Whether it’s the chemistry they have developed or something else behind it, Bridges, Taylor, guard Nick Schweitzer, tackles Devin Smith and Tyler Lotz, tight end Parker Bridges, and Trey Goettee, who has split time with Schweitzer, are getting the job done.

With the help of their protection, Saunders has passed for 1,693 yards this season and the team has rushed for 1,871 yards. Summerville carries a 9-1 record into its Nov. 6 game at Colleton County.

SC Dawg is right

While everything said on this blog is probably correct; the one thing that is most true is that Penn Wagers is the worst ref in the country. He has ruined so many games with poor judgement and calls proven to be factually incorrect that it is amazing he is allowed to watch football much less referee it. The world is better off for people who cook for high school teams but it is much worse off because Penn Wagers is a ref!

SC Dawg- SHOULD BE REPORTED!
Tuesday, November 10, 2009 9:06 AM

It is a shame that people like YOU are able to get on here and BLAST hard-working and honest people. Honestly, you should be ashamed of yourself. Once again, if you're going to post a blog, please make sure that you use grammar or spell check . Why would you put such a childish remark as "shut up" on a blog? Are you 6? Why must you hide behind a blog to report that PENN WAGERS (as you put this in caps to scream) is a bad official. Sir/Madame, if you feel that you can do a better on the field as a referee for the SEC, please by all means apply! I understand freedom of speech, but this has gone too far. I understand that sports fans can get obnoxious at times, but this is immature and petty. I am so proud of the Summerville Greenwave team. I would like to say THANK YOU to the Wagers family for taking time out of your busy schedule each week to support these players!

SC Dawg-Off Topic Response

Sir/Madame- Yes, I cook because my son is on the team. READ the article. It's a tradition. I do have another son who plays for the Green Wave, and am looking forward to him being part of the tradition. I don't know who wrote the original response, but I would suggest you "spell check" things before you send them out. Lastly, Hey - it's about some VERY COMMITTED 15 year olds (Dalton -Qtr Back through 18 year olds) who dedicate MUCH of their off school time to learn/practice/play Greenwave Football. Football has become a nearly year-round thing for those who are committed. If you don't have a son on the team, then you should be ashamed to say "Go Greenwave" since you don't truly understand the work/tradition/pride which is Greenwave Football. Lastly, don't EVER judge my husband! If you think you can do a better job - then have at it! First, you have to start at the high league, study the rule book, attend rules meetings, participate in scrimmages/spring games - that can take up to 2-10 years. Then you have work to earn the Shrine Bowl/North-South Game. After that, you may be noticed by the SoCon or Sun Belt. Then you may make the Bi Time - SEC/Pac 10 etc. My Husband has been a college football official for 30 years. He doesn't sit behind a computer and judge other people. There is only one person who has the right to judge other people - and you are certainly not The Lord. If you have any other comments, please feel free to SPEAK with ME, the person "who only cooks because her son is on the team" (843) 821-1002, instead of hiding behind a blog. This is about Summerville Green Wave Football and supporting the team. They DO NOT DESERVE this!! Why don't you you put your energy into simply showing up and supporting a team you seem to know so much about - and tell your friends. GO GREEN WAVE IN ROUND 1 OF PLAYOFFS!!!

SC Dawg--Off Topic

The only reason she cooks is because her son plays on the team. Bet she want be cooking when he graduates. "In the future" I can say whatever I want. "Another word from the wise" there are no "grammatical errors" you must be a ENGLISH TEACHER, so how about "SHUT-UP" I guess that has grammtical errors also. Again PENN WAGERS is known as one the worst refs. in the SEC. In closing--- it is nice that she cooks dinner for those players, but you make it sound like it is some big deal cooking for those players. If I had a son playing for Sville, I would do the same. ONE MORE TIME--PEN WAGERS PLEASE MOVE TO THE ACC!!! GO GREENWAVE!!!

SC Dawg, did you not realize that this article was about a family that cooks for Greenwave football players each week? In the future, you may want to respond with a blog that's actually related to the article. Another word to the wise-- make sure you don't have any grammatical errors when you post something online. (I hope you didn't graduate from UGA-- if so you may need a refund.) This was a great article about how a family is continuing a tradition and working to bring a team closer together. Instead of taking time to criticize good people, why don't you get out on the field and ref a few games yourself? Or, better yet, why don't YOU cook dinner weekly for a few high school kids (which would actually be a better use of your time).
