The Pinewood boys’ soccer team won three straight games over spring break to capture the prestigious West Ashley Tournament for the first time.
The Panthers opened the tournament by cruising to an 18-0 win over Cane Bay. Scoring for the Panthers were Justin Shields (5), Thomas Ferro (4), Brandon Ferro (3), Blasé Rastchian (2), Justin Shields (2), Malcolm Reed (1) and Nick Zuvia (1). After that opening round win, the going got a lot tougher for the Panthers.
In the second round they were able to get by a very good West Ashley team 2-1. Brandon Ferro and Justin White scored for the Panthers in the win, which set up a final against the Raptors of Academic Magnet.
As expected, the game was close. Neither team was able to break into the scoring column during regulation or overtime. With the game relegated to penalty kicks, the Panthers were able to survive with successful PK’s by Joe Sweet, Brandon Phinney, Malcolm Reed and Brandon Ferro, who nailed the game-winner for Pinewood.
Sweet, Reed and Ferro were named to the All-tournament team and Panther goalie Robert Beebe was selected as the tournament MVP. Coach Jason Birchwood was very satisfied with the outcome.
“Our guys really played hard over all three games,” he said. “They made the sacrifice of giving up their Spring break to come out here and compete. This tournament is a good measuring stick for us.” The Raptors and Panthers will meet again on April 21st at Pinewood in what should be an excellent game.
The Pinewood baseball team swept a double header from the Hilton Head Dolphins on Tuesday by scores of 13-3 and 11-1. With the wins, the Panthers improved to 13-6 overall and 7-0 in region play.
The Panthers put on an offensive show, using the long ball in both games to dominate the Dolphins. In the opener, Austin Heflin had two, 2-run homers (6th and 7th of the season). Also putting the ball over the fence were Taylor Wall (7) and Laquan Gilliard (4). Gilliard picked up the win on the mound, his second of the year compared to no losses. He threw a complete game, striking out seven and allowing only two hits.
In the second game, Alex Doucet notched the win to go 4-1 on the year. Doucet had four scoreless innings, striking out four and allowing only two hits. Wall and Heflin pitched the remaining two innings and both allowed only one hit.
In the second game, Wall went 3-for-4 at the plate with another home run (8). Gilliard also picked up his second dinger of the day (5) in going 2-for-3. Jarius Schumann added a 2-run homer, his first of the season.
In the two games, the Panthers had 28 hits and seven homeruns. The Panthers will play their last home game of the season today against South Lake Christian. They wind up the regular season next week with a trip to Hilton Head Christian on Tuesday and then conclude their season with a big game at Northwood Academy on April 23.
The Panthers are currently one game ahead of Northwood in the region standings, setting up a showdown Thursday.
