The Pinewood girls' basketball team upped their record to 15-4, 6-2 with a 51-45 win over the Hilton Head Christian Academy Lady Eagles on Friday. The score doesn’t indicate the closeness of the game as the Panthers had pulled out to a 51-28 lead with five minutes remaining in the game when coach Nancy Beatty emptied her bench. The Lady Eagles scored the final 17 points of the game to narrow the gap. The Panthers took it to the Lady Eagles right from the start, jumping out to a quick 12-0 lead. Kelsey Orvin opened the game with two jumpers sandwiched around a layup by Monet Scott. Jasmine Simmons added a jumper; Scott, who finished the game with 16 points, added another layup; and Megan Fish finished off the opening spurt with another basket to push the Panthers to the 12-0 start. The Panthers were able to emerge from the first quarter with a 7point lead, 16-9. The Lady Eagles narrowed the gap to 16-11 at the beginning of the second quarter when the Panthers went on a 10-2 run to move out to a comfortable 26-13 lead. Maria Corella and Hannah Runion both had 4 points during the run. After the Lady Eagles closed the gap to 26-17 on two baskets by Ellie Patterson, the Panthers finished off the second quarter with seven straight points on two buckets by Scott and a 3 pointer by Megan Fish at the buzzer. The start of the second half saw the Panthers open with 8 straight points to effectively put the game away. Scott started the run with two buckets; Simmons added a couple from the charity stripe; and Orvin threw in a jumper to give the Panthers a comfortable 41-17 lead. Simmons finished the game with 8 points; Fish had 7 and Runion and Orvin both had 6. Maria Corella wound up with 4 points while Marisa Patton had 2. Patterson led the Lady Eagles with 22. Beatty was happy with her team’s effort. “This was our best start to a game all season; we executed well right from the beginning and had no let downs during the game,” she said. The boy’s game featured the top two ranked teams in SCISA. The Panthers (17-13, 6-1) entered the game the No. 1 ranked team with the Eagles holding down the No. 2 spot. The two teams had met at Hilton Head several weeks ago where the Panthers came away with a 1 point win. The game started much like the girls' game as the Panthers jumped out to a quick 10-0 lead. Michael Pendley opened the game with a layup; Bruce Haynes, who had 15 points on the night, added a jumper; Jerome Deas, who led all scorers with 19, added two plus a free throw; and Steven Chase drained a 3 to stake the Panthers to the 10-0 start. The Eagles clawed their way back and were able to cut the deficit to 18-12 at the end of the quarter. The Panthers got a jumper from Haynes early in the second period and then went stone cold as those were the only points they would score in the period. After Haynes’ jumper, the Panthers held a 6 point lead only to leave the floor at half time trailing 27-20. The Eagles went on a 13-0 run to finish out the second period. The third period belonged to Deas as he had 11 of his 19 points in the period. He opened the second half with a 3 and finished it off with four straight free throws as the Panthers were able to regain the lead with 2:41 remaining in the period and go into the final period ahead 37-33. Despite a strong fourth quarter from the Eagles' Ethan Gort, who led his team with 14 points, including five in the final stanza, the Eagles were never able to get closer than 5 points the remainder of the night. The game ended with the Panthers taking home a 53-45 win. Chase wound up with 6 points on the night while Brett Alexander and Pendley each had 5 and Drew Williams chipped in with 4. Panthers coach Pat Eidson was impressed with his team’s toughness. “After scoring 18 points in the first quarter and then only 2 in the second period I am really proud of the way the guys hung in there,” he said. “This was a big game, with a big crowd and there was a lot of pressure on the team. I’m really pleased they way they fought through that second period.” Next week will see the Panthers on the road on Tuesday at Porter Gaud and Friday at Thomas Heyward. The Panthers wrap up the regular season the following Tuesday when they host Northwood Academy. In JV action the girls won a thriller 29-25 in overtime, while the JV boys fell 45-26.
