Panthers turn in powerful performance

The Pinewood Speed and Strength team finished second at the state meet in Orangeburg on Saturday.

Michael Pendley, Moses Richardson, Francois Gaudreault, Ethan Gaskins, Will Rogers, Joe Bates, Michael Grosso, Eric Nelson and Bradley Billsback represented the Panthers at the event.

Pendley and Richardson both wound up as state co-champions in their respective weight classes, Pendley in the 206-220 class and Richardson in the 170-180 class.

Athletes competed in five events - bench press, power clean, 40-yard dash, pro-shuttle run and vertical leap.

Pendley won the shuttle run and 40-yard dash on his way to sharing the championship, while Richardson captured the bench press and power clean.

Gaudreault won the bench press and 40 yard dash in the heavyweight division; Gaskins took the shuttle run and vertical leap in the 190-205 class; and Grosso who was first in the vertical in the 145-160 category.

The Pinewood girls’ soccer team moved one step closer to its first region title ever with a 4-1 victory, at home, over Hilton Head Christian.

Scoring for the Panthers were Briana Bleier (2), Megan Fish and Francesca Kassing.

The Panthers are 19-1 overall and 8-0 in the region. They have two remaining region games this week and need only to win one to capture the region championship.

The boys’ soccer team was able to get by a tough Christian team by a score of 4-3.

Brandon Ferro picked up two tallies for the Panthers with Justin White and Malcolm Reed getting the other goals. The team is now 19-3 overall.

The tennis team did not fare as well, dropping their first-round state playoff match to region foe Hilton Head Prep 5-2.

Picking up points for the Panthers were Adam Elliget, who defeated Joey Ryan 6-3, 6-0, and Davis Craig who beat Franklin Bakala 6-2, 6-3. The loss brings the team’s season to an end.
