The Fort Dorchester wrestling team clinched the Region 8-AAAA championship and the top playoff seeding that accompanies it by earning a 47-24 win over Summerville.
Patriot grapplers won nine out of 14 weight classes against the Green Wave on Thursday in a match at North Charleston. Wrestling started in the 138-pound weight class and by the time Summerville reached the strength of its lineup, the lightweights, the Fort had established a 37-6 lead. With some of the pressure off, the Patriots did well in the top of the lineup, winning two out of the first four lightweight bouts.
“The coaches worked us hard all week and told us to just go out there and do our best and that’s what I did,” said Fort junior Dallis Brown, who picked up a bonus point with a major decision in the 126-pound bout. “We usually get pretty amped for the Summerville match so it’s nice to get the win.”
Daquon Wilson (152), Joseph Hutchinson (160), Kevyn Flores (195), Delton Wells (220) and Javan Jordan (113) won their bouts by pin fall. Austin Ziliak (145) also earned a major decision and heavyweight Myles Moultire won by forfeit.
Picking up bonus points for the Green Wave were James Sass (106), Jordan Wigger (120) and Gavin Perkins (132). Sass and Wigger pinned their opponent while Perkins picked up a forfeit in the final bout of the evening.
The Fort improved its duals record to 15-3 and completed a clean sweep of its region opponents with the win.
“Things are going pretty good,” Brown said. “We are working hard and the coaches are getting us on the right track. Our goal is to make the state finals so now we will focus on the playoffs.”
The first and second rounds of the duals playoffs are scheduled for 1 p.m. Feb. 4. Because the Fort is the top seed for Region 8-AAAA, it will host and receive a bye in the first round. The Patriots will face the winner of the Conway/Wando match in the second round.
Summerville finishes the regular season as the region runner up so it will face Orangeburg-Wilkinson in the first round. If the Wave advances, it will face either host Carolina Forest or Richland Northeast in the second round.
Ashley Ridge did not make the playoffs as Beaufort claimed the region’s third and final seed.
The state championship is scheduled for Feb. 11 at Dreher High School.
