The Patriot wrestlers made their second-round playoff match with Wando Saturday look like a cakewalk.
Wando battled Conway at Fort Dorchester High School in the first round of the Class AAAA playoffs and earned a 35-31 win. Many of the individual matches in that contest went all three rounds.
In contrast, only two matches went the duration in the second-round matchup between the Patriots and the Warriors. Fort Dorchester, which received a bye in the opening round, won all 14 weight classes in the match to claim a 76-0 victory.
“I think Wando had a few wrestlers out sick or it may have been closer,” Fort Dorchester coach B.D. LaPrad said. “But our guys did what they needed to in order to advance and that is what’s important this time of year. I’m sure the next round will tough so we will have to be ready for it.”
On Saturday, Fort Dorchester earned bonus points in all but one weight class. Daquon Wilson (152-pound class), Michael Schuster (182), Kevyn Flores (195), Myles Moultrie (HWT), Tyre Wright (106), Cody Williams (138) and Austin Ziliak (145) all pinned their opponent in the first round and Javan Jordan (113) earned a pin in the third round.
“We faced Wando earlier this year and did well so we had a lot of confidence coming into the match,” Schuster said. “We have a good group of wrestlers and that allows us to move people around. We’ve had a lot of guys step up this year so now we just need to continue what we’ve been doing, working hard and making sure we don’t get pinned.”
Also earning wins for the Patriots were Jacob Hutchinson (160), Alex Bugarin (170), Delton Wells (220), Trevour Johnson (120), Ryan McGoldrick (126) and Daquan Buksha (132).
The Patriots traveled to face Lexington, the top-ranked 4-A team in the state, on Monday in the third round of the playoffs with a slot in the Lower State championship on the line. The Fort was eliminated with a 31-22 loss. Full results of the match were not available at press time.
Summerville also advanced to the third round of the wrestling playoffs after notching a pair of 59-16 wins over Orangeburg-Wilkinson and Carolina Forest Saturday. Earning wins for the Green Wave in its second-round matchup with Carolina Forest were James Sass, Trevon Pringle, Jordan Wigger, Gavin Perkins, Chad Wood, Jamal Lucas, Myron Smith, Kyle Sullivan, Oliver Galante and Cyle Crowder.
Summerville traveled to White Knoll Monday evening for the next round and fell 59-21. Full results from that match were also not available at press time.
