Colleton County made plays, but too many were called back for the Cougars to win at Fort Dorchester Friday.
Colleton (2-4, 0-1) had two touchdowns as well as some other potential momentum-changing plays called back on penalties as the Patriots (4-2, 1-2) earned a 34-28 region victory.
The Fort also drew a lot of yellow flags, particularly late in the game.
Colleton was penalized 13 times for 111 yards while the Fort lost 92 yards on 11 penalties.
“That was probably the ugliest game I’ve ever been involved with,” Fort coach Steve LaPrad said. “It was awful, the penalties and the unsportsmanlike stuff, it was just bad. Our defense did make big plays and our offense moved the ball, but our penalties killed us.”
After each team had a touchdown called back, Fort Dorchester got on the board first. Justin Gaillard intercepted a pass near midfield and returned it 35 yards to set up a first-and-goal for the Pats.
On first down, Keshon Flores ran off the right guard and dragged a Colleton defender into the end zone on a nine-yard touchdown run.
Josh Hall added his first of four PATs.
The Patriot defense held on Colleton’s ensuing possession, forcing a punt. The Fort then drove 41 yards to score. Senior Michael Sellars capped the drive with a two-yard plunge into the end zone and the Patriots took a 14-0 lead into the half.
Both teams passed for about the same yards in the first half, with Fort Dorchester netting 69 yards and Colleton 64. The Patriots rushed for 44 yards to Colleton’s 24. The big difference in the half was Gaillard’s pick and a second interception by Fort DB Tyler Walker.
In the second half, the Cougars nearly overcame a 34-13 deficit largely on the effort of quarterback Kevin Adams and running back Eric Kirkland Jr.
However, the Fort defense was able to make one final stand after the Cougars drove into the red zone in the final two minutes of the game.
“Our guys didn’t quit,” Colleton coach Leroy Riley said. “I’m proud of them. In the first half we had two touchdowns called back that could have made it an even game. I think we need to look at what we can do better but it was a great effort.”
The Cougars went with an onside kick to start the second half, but the Fort recovered. Then the Patriots fumbled the ball on second down and Colleton recovered.
The Cougars didn’t need long to get on the board with an 18-yard TD run by Kirkland.
Colleton held the Pats on their ensuing possession, but fumbled on their next drive. Fort Dorchester lineman Brian Williams hit Adams on a keeper to jar the ball loose. Linebacker Geno Porter recovered near the sideline and returned it 48 yards into the end zone with 8:31 remaining in the third quarter for a 20-7 Fort lead.
The Fort added a 22-yard TD pass to Rodney Gibbs and four-yard scoring run by Sellars. Meanwhile, the Cougars scored on two runs by Adams and a five-yard pass to James Wrice.
Colleton had a chance to take the lead after a drive into the red zone, but was stopped by two sacks.
Montae Adams and Bradley Jefferson combined on the first and then Adams had a solo sack on fourth down. From there, the Pats simply ran out the clock.
Kevin Adams completed 14-of-29 pass attempts for 163 yards and a TD while also rushing for 87 yards and a pair of TDs. Kirkland rushed for 80 yards.
Patriots’ QB Ethan Long completed 12-of-20 pass attempts for 120 yards and a TD. Gibbs had three receptions for 39 yards and Flores had three for 23 yards. Sellars led the Patriot rushers with 39 yards.
Linebacker Kevin Geddis led the Fort in tackles with 10 including 2.5 for a loss. Linemen Antonio Guy and Montae Adams both had nine tackles including two sacks.
