The Patriot football team will wrap up its spring practice with its second annual Spring Game May 29.

Players will face off in various skills competitions beginning at 7 p.m. at Bagwell Stadium.

Last spring the team had a weight-lifting competition, 7-on-7 session and kicking contest.

After the skills competitions, the Patriots will divide into two squads for an inter-team scrimmage.

The Fort has approximately 150 athletes out for its varsity and junior varsity teams this spring, which is a slight increase from last year.

That includes several returning starters, particularly on defense.

“Most of our special teams players are back and we have nine starters back on defense, though we need to develop some depth there,” Fort coach Steve LaPrad said.

“For the first time in a while, we have four starters back on the offensive line and players back on the defensive line so I think we are a little ahead of the game there. But we still have some holes to fill.”

Up front, Darius Rivers and Bradley Jefferson return for what will be their senior season.

Michael Sellers returns as the Patriots’ leading rusher. However, the Patriots have to replace their starting quarterback, another running back and several receivers.

Freshman Devron Glenn and sophomore Ethan Long are the frontrunners for the QB spot.

Glenn saw considerable action on the varsity last season when Galen Bennett was out with injuries. Long spent the year on the JV squad. Three other players are also taking snaps this spring.

On defense, the Patriots return three of their top four tacklers from last season – linebacker Geno Porter and linemen Montae Adams and Antonio Guy. Others returning with considerable experience include defensive backs Drake Britton, Keshaun Flores, Tyler Walker, Tyler Holmes, Laurez Matthews and Justin Gaillard; lineman William Doyle; and linebackers Tracy Jones, Miguel Quinn and Evan Thompson.
