Another first took place at Pinewood Preparatory School on Tuesday night and this time it was on the soccer field.
Sophomore Courtney Angotti-Smith scored her 100th career goal for Pinewood in a victory over Northwood Academy. Entering the game the Panther striker needed just two goals to reach the milestone and that proved to be easily accomplished as Pinewood cruised to a 13-0 victory.
Inside the first five minutes, Angotti-Smith scored the two goals and her teammates rushed to the Northwood end of the field to help her celebrate.
“This is so great for Courtney as she is just such a phenomenal player,” Pinewood coach Gail Osborne said. “In all my years of coaching I have never seen anyone reach this milestone so for this to happen here at Pinewood is outstanding.”
The game was stopped momentarily while the ball used during the momentous occasion was presented to the sophomore and taken to her family on the sideline.
“I am extremely honored to have been able to score 100 goals for Pinewood,” Angotti-Smith said. “I have to thank my teammates because without their support on the field I would not have been able to achieve this.”
With their sprits high, the Panthers continued to rack up the goals with another two coming from Smith for a total of four on the night. Kelsey Orvin and Briana Bleier provided a pair of Panther goals each while Morgan Stice, Megan Chase, Francesca Kassing, Jasmine Simmons and Megan Fish also scored. Marisa Patton had the shut out in goal.
Softball
The Pinewood softball team opened its season with a 19-2 victory over Ashley Hall earlier in the week. Pinewood had 12 hits, including four doubles, and 14 RBI’s. The team also had 16 stolen bases. The Panthers sole home three times.
Leading the way at the plate was Michelle Eddy who with two doubles and a single accumulated five of the 19 runs. Kaylee Hill and Olivia Coyle were both 2-for-4 at the plate and Sam Willcott was 2-for-2.
“All of the ladies contributed to this game,” coach John Eckley said. “Let’s hope they keep the momentum going against our next opponent.”
