The Pinewood girls’ basketball team had its biggest test of the season last week.
The Lady Panthers played local SCISA rival Northwood Academy.
It was Northwood Academy who prevailed this time in the duel. By beating Pinewood
59-44, the Chargers now have the edge in region play.
Northwood started out strong with sophomore sensation Amber Campbell hitting a three pointer closely followed by a lay up to push ahead 5-0. Some careless ball handling by both teams followed while both teams tried to find their groove and settle their nerves. Pinewood managed to get on the scoreboard after three minutes with the help of a rebound from Bri Boyd. The ball then travelled back and forth with both teams making some rebounds and the score was 12-7 Northwood at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter started in Northwood's favor again with another three pointer by Campbell and yet more layups as the Chargers surged ahead 19-7. Pinewood missed out on some key plays and free throws that allowed Northwood to gain the advantage and continue to score to go up 29-7.
Pinewood finally got on the scoreboard with 1:40 left in the second quarter. A nice three pointer by Katelyn Dambaugh followed by a lay up from Maria Corella gave the Panthers a little spark going into the half trailing 31-15.
The third quarter started much like the first two periods of play with Northwood pushing ahead again. Pinewood did pick it up though and got into a better rhythm, allowing the Panthers to creep back into the game. Pinewood did have a positive third quarter as it managed to outscore The Chargers but still trailed 42-28 entering the final period.
The fourth quarter saw the scoring go back and forth with Pinewood giving Northwood Academy a little too much time to shoot. By now closing the gap in the score was just a little too much for Pinewood and it was Northwood who came away with the win.
The high scorer on the night was Campbell with 28 points. Pinewood's leading scorer was Maria Corella with 13 closely followed by Raygon Hendrix with 12.
"I was disappointed with how we played in the first half,” Pinewood coach Nancy Beatty said. “Our ball handling and our possession was not up to par and we were beaten by a stronger team on the night. However, we were better in the second half and came out much stronger and played better. Next time we play them we will have to make sure we play well in all four quarters.”
Pinewood is now 14-6 and 6-1 in the region. The next time these two teams meet will be in the middle of February and Pinewood will need to win to take a piece of the region title.
