The Lady Panthers secured a relatively easy win over Porter-Gaud Friday as they downed the region opponent 65-27.
With only two minutes of the game played, Pinewood took an 8-0 lead to set the tone. By the end of the first quarter, the Lady Panthers were up 25-0 so Pinewood coach Nancy Beatty was able to clear her bench and give some of her less experienced players quality minutes.
In the second quarter, Pinewood continued to surge as the Cyclones didn’t score until three minutes into the quarter. By halftime the score was 39-8 in Pinewood’s favor and the game was well out of reach for Porter-Gaud.
“It was a total team win and we played well.” Beatty said. “It was great to be able to start seniors Marisa Patton and Savannah Lax in a home game. Both players have been key members of the team this whole season and it is nice to see them contribute and see them step up as leaders.”
The leading scorer for the Lady Panthers was Junior Bri Boyd with 15 points. Jenifer Rhodes was close behind with 13 points.
The Lady Panthers are now 15-6 on the season and 7-1 in region play.
The Pinewood boys’ team also faced archrival Porter-Gaud in a region show down. When the two teams met earlier in the season, the Panthers came away with an overtime win at Porter-Gaud so a win at home would all but clinch the region title and a top seed to the state tournament. However, Pinewood has been hit hard with some key injuries in the past two weeks and that seemed to hurt the team in the rematch.
The Cyclones took a 14-10 lead in the first quarter and never looked back, gaining a 64-42 road win. C.J. James scored 20 and Sterling Smalls added 19 for the Cyclones. Pinewood’s top scorers on the night were Keith Pinckney with 18 and Jerome Deas, who finished with 12. The Panther's are currently tied for first in the region with a 5-1 record and now stand 14-9 on the season.
Coach Pat Eidson was proud of his team's effort.
“We have faced a lot of adversity during the past two weeks,” Eidson said. “In my 33 years of coaching I have never lost four of my top six players to injuries all with-in a four day period. In the long run, if we stay focused and get healthy, the adversity we have faced will only make us a stronger team. It's up to us to dig down and find a way to finish the season strong.”
The good news for the Panthers is that now both Deas and fellow senior Michael Pendley are back in the lineup.
