No De'angelo Henderson. No Chris Williams. No problem for the Summerville Green Wave.
Cody Reese had more than 200 all-purpose yards and scored three touchdowns to lead Summerville past West Ashley, 38-14, on Friday night before about 2,000 at West Ashley High School.
The Green Wave, who improved to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in Region 8-AAAA, was forced to play the game without 13 players, including nine starters who were suspended by the South Carolina High School League for their involvement in a postgame brawl last Friday night with Stratford.
The 13 players were suspended from one to three games by the High School League, but
Green Wave coach John McKissick would not say which players were suspended or for how long.
Henderson, the team's leading rusher, was suspended for three games, according to a source on the Summerville team.
"I thought what the High School League did was unfair," McKissick said. "The crime didn't fit the punishment. It was just some pushing and shoving that lasted less than a minute after the game."
McKissick said he thought about appealing the decision, but was told not to by the Dorchester school district.
"The district told me to let it drop and I work for them, so I let it drop," he said.
McKissick and West Ashley coach Bobby Marion agreed that the Green Wave and Wildcats players would not shake hands following the game.
"It's been a pretty rough week for everyone," said Reese, who caught two touchdown passes and returned a punt for another score.
"I've got a lot of friends on the West Ashley team, so I didn't think there would be any trouble this week. Both teams played hard. With all the guys we had out, everyone needed to step up tonight."
With Henderson out of the lineup and with three starters on the offensive line missing, the Green Wave was forced to rely on Reese and the passing of quarterback Dalton Saunders.
Saunders completed 6 of 13 passes for 139 yards for three touchdowns.
On the second play from scrimmage, Saunders found Reese all alone behind the Wildcats' secondary for a 57-yard scoring strike.
"I couldn't believe how wide open I was," Reese said. "The linebacker let me go and I was all alone."
The Wildcats (3-3, 0-2) answered on their next possession, as quarterback K.J. Cohen capped a long drive with a 4-yard touchdown run.
But it was all Green Wave after that. After a 47-yard field from Michael Scholz, Reese scored on a 71-yard punt return and then Marlon Pryor added a 27-yard touchdown catch to make it 24-7 just before halftime.
"I'm real proud of the way we played tonight," McKissick said. "The players stayed focused despite all the controversy that was around the team this week. That seemed to get us fired up pretty good."
Cohen competed 17 of 31 passes for 165 yards, but penalties killed more than one drive for the Wildcats.
"Anytime we got a little bit of momentum we'd get a penalty or we'd drop a pass," Marion said. "We had plays that were there. We just didn't execute."
