The Summerville Green Wave claimed two of the top honors for the fifth annual All-County Line football all-star list, but three other Summerville-area teams are also represented.
Summerville Communications released its All-County Line Football Team, a collaborative effort between the Summerville Journal Scene and The Goose Creek Gazette, this week. The pool of players came from the following high schools: Ashley Ridge, Cane Bay, Fort Dorchester, Goose Creek, Pinewood Prep, Stratford and Summerville.
This year, Summerville’s John McKissick was named the Dorchester County Coach of the Year. McKissick surpassed the 600-career coaching wins benchmark this season, a mark no other football coach at any level has ever met.
But what is more impressive to some is the way he and his staff managed to keep their players’ morale up through a tough time.
The Green Wave got out to a 2-4 start this season, one of its worst ever. However, McKissick and his staff never lost faith in their team. Under McKissick’s guidance the team kept striving to improve and kept its eyes on the big picture.
Summerville turned its season around and went 5-0 in region action, including a convincing win over previously undefeated Bluffton, to claim the Region 8-AAAA championship and the top playoff seeding that went with it.
The Wave was upset in the first round of the playoffs by a very good Spartanburg team, but finished with a 7-5 record that is far better than many predicted early in the season.
Sophomore linebacker Mac McCurry had a lot to do with the turnaround, which is why he was named the Dorchester County Defensive Player of the Year.
At the beginning of the year, McCurry was one of the leading candidates for the starting quarterback job. However, he was moved to linebacker for the team’s final pre-season scrimmage and quickly showed he could make plays on that side of the ball as well.
During 11 regular-season games McCurry made 175 tackles, nearly 70 more than any other player on his team. Of those, 93 were solo tackles and nine were sacks.
By the time region play rolled around, opposing teams knew they had better account for No. 12, who just seems to have a knack for finding the ball.
Ashley Ridge running back Romelo Doctor was named the Dorchester County Offensive Player of the Year.
When teams took the field against the Swamp Foxes they knew their top priority was containing this explosive rusher. This season Doctor rushed for 1,450 yards, scored 20 TDs and participated in the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas all-star game, during which he scored a touchdown.
Doctor’s combination of speed, moves and drive have led to some of the most memorable moments in the short history of the Ashley Ridge football program. The four-year starter finishes his high school career with 5,045 rushing yards and 59 touchdowns, making him the program’s all-time rushing leader.
The Goose Creek Gators claimed three of the other top honors.
Goose Creek’s Chuck Reedy was named the Berkeley County Coach of the Year. Reedy guided the Gators to a 13-0 record before they were removed from the playoffs by the South Carolina High School League Executive Committee after self reporting a possible ineligible player on the roster. The player in question, a special needs student, never entered a game Goose Creek was leading by less than 41 points.
Tramel Terry was named the Berkeley County Offensive Player of the Year. Terry, who is set to enroll at Georgia this month, finished his career as the state’s Mr. Football selection and played in the annual Shrine Bowl. He was also supposed to play in the Under Armour All-American game in early January before tearing his anterior cruciate ligament in the Shrine Bowl. He had nearly 1,700 total yards between rushing and receiving this season and scored 24 touchdowns.
He had 52 touchdowns in his career and topped 4,300 total yards.
Gator end Gerald Turner was named the Berkeley County Defensive Player of the Year. Turner, a South Carolina commitment, dominated one side of the line and teams often ran away from him this season. He had 66 total tackles, including 19 for lost yardage. He added eight sacks and pressured the quarterback 25 times.
He also played in the Shrine Bowl, finishing with six tackles and an interception in the South Carolina squad’s victory.
