The Summerville girls won their 13th Outback Steakhouse Azalea Classic championship March 13 and a member of the Green Wave boys claimed the MVP for the field events.
Summerville won four events on the girls’ side and had Top 3 finishes in six other events as the accumulated 114 points to win the 18th annual meet. Rounding out the top five spots in a field of 20 teams were Wando (90 points), Fort Dorchester (62), West Ashley 943) and Cane Bay (42).
“We have a great group of leaders who work hard at getting better every day,” Summerville girls’ coach Jim Kilbreth said. “They know what to do when they get out here so I don’t have to coach them much.”
Junior distance runner Sydney Hazel won the 1,600-meter run with a 5:23.13 time in the fnals and the 3,200 with an 11:38.66 finish. Fellow junior Breanna Blanton set a new meet record in the 800, finishing in 2:19.40. Her seedtime was 2:18.34.
With their help, the Lady Wave relay teams also did well. Summerville won the 4x400 relay with a 4:10.68 time and placed third in the 4x100 relay.
Noelle Cunningham placed second in the 400 hurdles and fifth in the 100 hurdles. Nyala Waring placed third in the 400 and fifth in the 100.

Wilkinson, the 4-A defending state champion in the triple jump, has big goals this season.
“First of all, I don’t want to lose in the event I won at state last year,” he said. “Otherwise, we’ve got a good team so I want to do everything I can for it and stay ahead of the game. It’s early in the season, but I’m not satisfied with my results so far. I need to make improvements.”
Summerville compiled 99 points to place second to Fort Dorchester, which finished with 109. Rounding out the top five for a field of 20 teams were Wando (90), Battery Creek (43.5) and Spring Valley (42).
