A good run for a group of Lady Green Wave athletes ended Friday.
Summerville (18-6) was eliminated from the Class AAAA girls’ basketball playoffs with a 77-54 loss to Ridgeview in the second round.
“Ridgeview is an excellent team, but from our standpoint right now all we can think about is that tonight we are saying goodbye to three very high quality ladies,” Summerville second-year coach Matt Legare said. “This group of seniors helped us win 35 games in two years and got the ball rolling for us.”
It was the final basketball game Summerville seniors Sarah Montei, Keyona Smalls and Shacoya Smith will play in a Green Wave uniform. Montei went out shooting and finished with 13 points while sophomore Kwanza Murray matched that team-high total.
Unfortunately for Summerville, the Lady Blazers (20-6) had four players score in double digits as they advanced to face Goose Creek in the third round.
“We came out focused and that helped us pull away from them,” Ridgeview coach Terrence Gibson said. “This is the playoffs so we have to stay hungry and focused because you are in a one-game situation. We had some guards step up and some post players step up so it was just a wonderful game for the entire team.”
Ridgeview hit 83 percent of its free throws and was 50 percent from the floor. Alexus Jackson led the way, posting a game-high 22 points. Nikia Squire added 17 for the Lady Blazers.
After Ridgeview pulled out to a substantial lead in the first four minutes, Summerville rallied to cut the lead to 5 as late in the opening period Montei made two steals and three buckets while Smith added a free throw and Ashley Green hit a three-pointer. However, the Lady Blazers regained the momentum with a three-point play in the closing seconds of the first to take a 24-16 advantage.
Ridgeview then made three of the first four buckets of the second period, the last of which was a 3, and never looked back.
