The chances for the Diamond Wave seniors in the 2009 American Legion playoffs got slimmer Tuesday.
The Wave fell by a 12-2 margin at home as the Sumter pitching staff threw a four-hitter. It was the second consecutive loss the P-15’s had handed the Wave, which entered Wednesday’s game in Sumter in a do-or-die position. The third game of the best-of-five series was played after press time.
“In the first two games, we were right there with them through the first four or five innings, but then we let them pull away” Summerville coach John Hayes said. “We just don’t quite have enough fire power yet to keep up with a team as good as Sumter in the later innings.”
Sumter won its league and played like a league champ in those two games. On Tuesday, starting pitcher Tyler Smith only gave up one earned run in the first 5 and 1/3 innings. He gave up three hits and as many walks while striking out four.
Tyler Broome closed the game out for the P-15s and earned the save by allowing only one hit and a walk while striking out two in two and 2/3 innings. Matt Chapman took the loss for Summerville after throwing seven full innings.
Darryl White led the Wave batters, going 2-for-3 at the plate. Grant Williamson and Jeffrey Kinard had the other Summerville hits.
The p-15’s got on the board in the first inning. Blake Graham led off with a double and then came home on a grounder by Bruce Caldwell. Chapman bounced back by only allowing one of the next 16 Sumter batters to get a hit.
But as the top of the fifth inning rolled around, Sumter got the pitcher’s number. The P-15’s scored four runs on six hits during the inning to take command. Smith opened the inning with a double and then scored on a bunt single by Graham. Sumter then scored off hits by Caldwell and Michael Blackmon and a sacrifice fly by Tony Micklon.
Summerville came to bat in the bottom of the frame down 0-5. Williamson doubled and moved to third on a hit by Darryl White. He then came home on a grounder by Bryan Peagler.
However, Sumter only allowed one of the next 15 Summerville batters to get a hit. The P-15’s did give up three walks from that point out and it led to Summerville’s second run.
Catcher Kyle Crowder and infielder Trey Young opened the bottom of the sixth with a pair of walks. Andre Collum reached on a fielding error and then created the scoring opportunity with some creative base running.
After a throw to first, the ball was dropped so Collum took a big lead. It turned out to be too big and he got caught in a pickle. Meanwhile Crowder broke for home and just beat a throw to the plate for a 6-2 score.
Sumter played stiff defense after that and added insurance runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings. Graham led the Sumter batters, going 3-for-6 with two doubles and four runs scored. Caldwell was 3-for-5 with a double, two RBIs and two runs. Patrick Gordon was 3-for-5 with a double. Cam Martin was 2-for-4 with an RBI, a run and two sacrifices.
Sumter improved to 20-5 while Summerville fell to 7-9.
