Last school year Ashley Ridge athletic fields were recognized for being among the best-kept facilities in the state. This school year, the SportsTurf Managers Association honored Swamp Fox groundskeepers for having one of the best-maintained softball fields in the nation.
On Jan. 13, the association presented its 2011 Field of the Year Award for the Parks and Schools Softball Division to Ashley Ridge Athletic Director/assistant principal Bobby Behr and Adam Davis, the two Ashley Ridge employees who are responsible for the majority of the upkeep and design of the school’s athletic fields. The award, which was presented during the association’s annual Conference and Exhibition at the Long Beach Convention Center and Hyatt in California, distinguishes the Ashley Ridge facility as the top field in the nation for its division.
“The Field of the Year Award validates the intense dedication of our members,” Sports Turf Managers Association CEO Kim Heck said. “Each year STMA awards no more than 14 Fields of the Year, so a very small percentage of our members are winners. Bobby Behr and his crew are very deserving of this prestigious award.”
To be considered for the award, Behr and his staff submitted 30 pictures of the softball field along with a 20-page document explaining how they manage the field.
A panel of six judges independently scored each entry for the contest based on the playability and appearance of the playing surfaces, innovative solutions employed, effective use of budget, and the development and implementation of a comprehensive, sound agronomic program.
Since 1992, the association has named national and state Field of the Year recipients in the Baseball, Football, Soccer, Softball and Sporting Grounds divisions. For each field type, awards may be given in three categories: Professional, College and University, and Schools and Parks.
Each national Field of the Year winner receives complimentary registration to the association’s conference and exhibition, three nights lodging, and signature clothing for staff members. The winning fields will also be featured in a 2012 article in SportsTurf Magazine.
The association is a not-for-profit, professional association for the men and women who manage sports fields. Its more than 2,600 members oversee sports fields and facilities at schools, colleges and universities, parks and recreational facilities, and professional sports stadiums.
