Swamp Fox senior Beccah Paonita, on Feb. 2, signed to play softball for the University of South Carolina Sumter.
“I liked their coach and feel it’s a place where I will get a good education,” Paonita said. “The campus isn’t too big, which I like. I’ve always looked forward to playing in college. My mom played and loves to come to my games so I wanted to do it for her as well as for myself.”
Paonita has held down first base for the Swamp Foxes since the team was formed. In her third season with the team last year she was named the Ashley Ridge Defensive MVP and to the Region 8-AAAA all-region team.
Ashley Ridge coach Angi Brush said the infielder will be a great asset for USC Sumter.
“She has been just awesome for us,” Brush said. “Her work ethic is tremendous and she is definitely a team player. She has a good sense of humor so she gets along well with her teammates.”
With Paonita’s help, the Swamp Foxes claimed the region title last season, just as they claimed the Region 6-AA title the two years before. Now the senior is looking to keep the trend going.
“We have our sights set on the region crown again so hopefully we can repeat and make it further in the playoffs than last year,” she said.
Paonita hasn’t decided on a major yet, but says she would like to pursue a career as a coach.
