If an opponent slipped to the ground during a softball game, an athlete who is a good sport might offer them a hand getting up. A Summerville mom has teamed up with ball players across the Lowcountry to do one better.
When the Garrett School of Technology softball team rolled into town to play Ashley Ridge last spring, the Swamp Fox field was wet and messy. This caused trouble for the Falcon team, which was without cleats.
“The Garret players spent more time on the ground than on their feet,” Terina Dye, the mother of a player on the Ashley Ridge team, said. “But they kept getting back up and trying to play. It broke my heart so I vowed that very night I would not allow them to start another season without cleats.”
In that moment, Field of Dreams Athletic Charity was born. Dye sent out a request for used baseball and softball cleats to ball players, coaches, teachers, anyone she thought might be in a position to help the team from the academic magnet school. Her daughter Allyson and son Bryan, a member of the Swamp Fox baseball team, also did what they could to spread the word.
The family was a bit taken back by the response it received. The Bishop England softball team, which like Ashley Ridge is a region opponent of the Falcons, raised enough funds to purchase every player on the Garrett Tech softball team a new pair of cleats.
The Swamp Fox baseball team joined forces with Bryan’s travel team, the Summerville Shockwave, to raise enough funds to purchase a dozen pair of cleats for the Falcon baseball team. The group also donated used equipment such as gloves and uniform pants.
Upon hearing about the cause, officials with 3n2 Sports offered the charity a discount on the new cleats and donated some shoes themselves so the entire Garrett softball and baseball teams would have cleats this season. The company also threw in free sling bags for the players.
The equipment was presented to the teams March 5 at Garrett Tech.
“The kids were shocked that people not associated with their school took an interest in them,” Terina said. “I told them their dedication touched my heart and that’s what started this. I believe in community service and I can’t think of a better way to get my family involved.
“My hope now is to make this an ongoing cause. I want to continue serving our area, whether it’s by providing equipment or helping a kid who can’t afford to play Rec ball do so. I’m hoping we can help others in need.”
