The Ashley Ridge golf team finished with a 349 score at the Lowerstate match May 4 to qualify for the South Carolina AA championship.
Led by Grant Opoulos, who finished with 85, the Swamp Foxes placed sixth in the Lowerstate match at Black Bear Golf Club to advance to the state championship to be held May 11 at True Blue Golf Course in Myrtle Beach.
Rounding out the team’s top five performances were Ben Crimminger (87), Will Chitty (88), Shuler Cotton (89) and Connor O’Rourke (96).
What makes the qualifying round that much more impressive is the fact that the Swamp Fox team is comprised exclusively of underclassmen and is in its debut season.
Only one of the team’s top five scorers at Black Bear is even in high school.
Chitty is a sophomore while Opoulos and O’Rourke are eighth-graders and Crimminger and Cotton are seventh-graders.
Other team members include eight-graders Taylor Esch and Chandler Lunny, freshman Cason Woods and sophomores Paul Gonzales and Zach Girone.
Despite its youth and playing against teams such as Pinewood, Bishop England, Fort Dorchester and Summerville, Ashley Ridge had an 11-6 record during the regular season. Swamp Fox coach Kenny Walker says playing a tough schedule paid off in the long run.
“We learned from playing teams that are better than us and teams that have quality players,” he said.
“Our guys weren’t intimidated at the Lowerstate match. They got up there on the first tee and hit it right down the middle as if they were just at practice. This is a fun group. They have a great work ethic and are fearless.”
Waccamaw turned in the best performance at the Lowerstate match, finishing with a 306 score.
Others qualifying from the Lowerstate were Bishop England (308), Pelion (325), Aynor (329) and Cheraw (346). The six teams will compete with six teams from the upper state at the May 11 match.
