Swamp Foxes claim region win
Ashley Ridge opened region play on a good note, earning a 30-7 win over Colleton County Friday.
“We finally put a whole team effort together in all three phases of the game,” Ashley Ridge coach Kenny Walker said. “ We have lost a couple of games this year while leading into the second half and were finally able to finish.”
The Swamp Foxes improved to 2-5 with the win while the Cougars dropped to 0-7.
Vernon Moree scored on runs of 6 and 26 yards while Romelo Doctor scored on a 10-yard run. Ashley Ridge also scored on a 7-yard pass from Jacob Thompson to Fred Weeks and a 33-yard field goal by Cameron Smith, who was 3 for 4 on extra-point attempts.
Three of the Swamp Foxes’ five losses this season came to teams that remain undefeated. Unfortunately for Ashley Ridge fans, the Foxes face another undefeated team this week. Ashley Ridge hosts Bluffton for its homecoming game, scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Friday.
“We have a very good and athletic team coming in,” Walker said. “We will have to play a very clean game with no penalties and no turnovers to compete with them. I think we are capable of doing that and hopefully we will have a chance going into the fourth quarter.”
Bluffton, which posted a 26-3 record in Class AAA over the past two seasons, made the jump to 4-A ball this season. The Bobcats are coming off a 34-10 victory over Beaufort in their Region 8-AAAA debut last week.
That was the team’s closest game of the season. Prior to last week, Bluffton was outscoring its opponents 336 to 32. However, Wade Hampton and Beaufort are the only two 4-A teams the Bobcats have faced.
Bluffton likes to air it out and is good at it. The Bobcats have passed for nearly 1,200 yards and 25 touchdowns this season. The team has three different receivers with more than 200 receiving yards.
The Bobcats defense has 21.5 sacks on the season and 11 interceptions.
But don’t forget, Ashley Ridge is the defending region champion and will enter the game with the same 1-0 mark in region play as Bluffton.
