The Ashley Ridge boys’ basketball team earned its first victory Tuesday.
In a battle between the Lowcountry’s two newest high schools, the Swamp Foxes earned a 42-22 win over the Cobras of Cane Bay.
Both schools opened their doors this fall with only freshmen and sophomores, but compete at the varsity level against teams that also include juniors and seniors.
“These kids have worked so hard for so long,” Ashley Ridge coach Brian Welch said after the monumental win. “It’s nice for them to get a little something back. I’ve been telling them that all the running and throwing up and the diving on the floor was going to pay off so tonight truly is special. They are a tough group of kids who work hard every day and they haven’t let things get to them.”
While its 1-8 record doesn’t reflect it, despite the disadvantages it has faced this season, the Swamp Fox team has been competitive.
“We had some tough losses,” Welch said. “We have a double-overtime loss in there. We have a loss where we just didn’t play one good quarter against Hilton Head. These kids are getting better every day and that has been their focus. I’m real proud of them.”
The lead changed hands four times in the first period before Ashley Ridge pulled out to a 10-7 advantage entering the second period. The Foxes then extended the lead to 24-12 at the half and put the game away in the third period.
“We played a decent fist half but I really harped on how the first three minutes of the third quarter was going to dictate how this game was going to go,” Welch said. “They came out hungry, had some great traps and forced some turnovers.”
The Foxes used a variety of shots, including several free throws, to reach its 42 points. The Cobras, which are still after their first win, got some good looks at the basket in the game, but didn’t capitalize on enough of them.
Tre Deloach led all scorers with 14 points and Khalil Davis finished with 11. Romelo Doctor, Charles Hanckel, Chriss Redd and Andrew Kolgaklis also had multiple baskets for the Foxes. Cameron West led the Cobras with 8 points while Sheldon Harris, Centry Manning and Henry Taylor also had multiple baskets.
