This month the Fox Swamp football program began laying the foundation for its 2009 campaign with its first spring camp.

Last spring, the school wasn’t open yet and the team’s coach hadn’t completed his move to Summerville so the team didn’t have spring practice.

But the team was able to get two full weeks of practice in this spring and will have its first spring game May 27.

The inter-club scrimmage will be held at Ashley Ridge and is tentatively scheduled for a 4 p.m. start.

Ashley Ridge coach Doc Davis says having several days for evaluation and to touch up on skills this month should help.

“Things are starting to shape up,” Davis said.

“We still have a long way to go, but we are certainly ahead of where we were last year. One of the main things we wanted to do this spring was to get everyone in the right position and I think we have. Our players have to go both ways so the fall isn’t the time for us to be figuring out that we have a player at linebacker who would help us more in the secondary.”

Because Ashley Ridge opened in the fall with only freshmen and sophomores, the Foxes have the luxury of returning all their starters from last season.

“That helps a lot,” Davis said. “Some of them had to dust the cob webs out of their head the first week, but they were already familiar with the things the coaches were talking about. We didn’t have to start from scratch like we did last summer so that was nice.”

Rising freshmen will have the opportunity to challenge some of the team’s starters this summer.

One player who seems to have his position locked up is quarterback Cameron Cox, who played in every game last season.

“He has a lot of common sense and knows a lot about how the quarterback position should be played,” Davis said. “He has a good arm and you don’t have to explain things to him two or three times.”
