The Ashley Ridge boys’ basketball team placed third at the Lanier Holiday Classic held in Atlanta.
The Swamp Foxes defeated Mountain View 60-44 in the third-place game Dec. 29. Romelo Doctor paced the team with a game-high 27 points. DJ Stevens added 8 for Ashley Ridge while Sean White added 7. Mikey Goodwine, Donovan Thompson, Vernon Moree, Tray Jenkins and Malik Graham also scored for the Swamp Foxes, who improved to 8-4 on the season with the win.
“It was a fantastic trip and such a great experience for our kids,” Ashley Ridge coach Brian Welch said. “We faced some very good competition that should help us in preparation for region play. I feel like we had a strong showing getting out of there with a third-place finish. The trip was also about more than just basketball. Providing new opportunities and unique experiences for our kids was also an important piece. We did a lot of fun team things while in Atlanta that I think the kids really enjoyed. Some of our guys have been around a long time and it was nice to take such a special trip with them before they walk across that stage.”
Ashley Ridge opened the tournament with a 64-63 overtime victory over Whitewater. Fred Weeks led the Swamp Fox scorers with 20 points. Moree added 15 and Doctor 12. Stevens, Goodwine and Jenkins also scored for Ashley Ridge.
In the second round, the Swamp Foxes dropped a game to Lambert. Ashley Ridge travels to Wando Jan. 4 and opens region play Jan. 8 when it hosts Bluffton.
