When the Ashley Ridge softball team returns from spring break, it will make a run at the Region 6-AA title.

The Swamp Foxes began their inaugural season with an 8-0 run.

Five of those wins are in the region. The team – which is comprised of five sophomores, four freshmen and three players who aren’t even in high school yet – even upset traditional AA powerhouse Bishop England.

“Our players come from diverse backgrounds but they have really come together and are now comfortable with each other,” Ashley Ridge coach Lindsey Blackmon said.

“They know what everyone can do now. I think we’ve had a solid start considering we have a win over Cane Bay and Bishop England.”

Pitcher and co-captain Paige Daschaine has a powerful arm that has been a big part of the team’s success.

In the 1-0 victory over the Bishops, she fanned 11 batters.

“Paige has certainly contributed, but we have also been productive at the plate,” Blackmon said.

“Our line up is strong one through nine and we have some hitters on the bench. I’ve also have an incredible staff. Jeff Rabun and Jimmie Guyton have been a big part of what we’ve done so far. The main thing is the team just needs to continue to work on the mental aspects of the game.”

Infielder Chelsea Guyton and outfielder Kelby Rourk are the team’s other captains.

This week, Ashley Ridge is competing in the Azalea Invitational Tournament at Gahagan Park.

On Tuesday, the Foxes were scheduled to face Williamsport (Pennsylvania) and Cane Bay.

The two teams that survived the Tuesday games are scheduled to compete in the Division 4 championship game April 8 at 10 a.m.
