J.D. Tucker was clutch down the stretch as the Summerville boys held off a hard-fighting Ashley Ridge team Tuesday to earn a 58-54 win.
“We have great respect for the AR team and knew it would be a war,” Summerville coach Greg Elliott said. “We did not play smart during the fourth quarter and were fortunate to win. AR has had a tough season but their kids are very resilient. We played hard defensively and held them to no three-pointers in the second half, but we gave them some old-fashion three-point plays down the stretch. Still, we are happy to be 6-0 in the region with a chance to clinch the region title at home Friday night.”
The Swamp Foxes got a pair of three-point shots from junior Fred Weeks and one from senior Clark Batts to help them take a 22-21 lead into the half. However, Summerville opened the third period strong, taking advantage of some breaks and working the ball inside to gain a seven-point lead. The Swamp Foxes kept battling, but the Wave then drew some fouls and hit some free throws to take a 38-30 lead into the final period.
Ashley Ridge (4-14, 1-5) began to take advantage of free throws in the fourth and pulled within a point with approximately two minutes remaining in the game, but Summerville (12-9, 6-0) finished stronger.
Tucker hit seven of eight free throws in the final two minutes. He scored 14 of his game-high 29 points in the fourth period. Brandon Wilkerson finished with 12 points.
Weeks led the Swamp Foxes with 21 points and Lorenzo Baker finished with eight.
Summerville hosts Beaufort Friday and only needs one win to claim the Region 8-AAAA title. Ashley Ridge travels to Fort Dorchester, which is hoping it can claim runner-up honors by winning its next two region games.
