Green Wave defensive back T.J. Hopkins dives to tackle Bluffton receiver Marquis Webber.

The Green Wave football team defeated previously unbeaten Bluffton 31-22 Friday to claim the Region 8-AAAA championship.
Summerville lost three of its first four games this season but has righted the ship, winning its last five to improve to 7-4 overall with a 5-0 mark in the region. Bluffton fell to 10-1, 4-1.
Summerville running back Davon Anderson rushed for 290 yards and scored three touchdowns on carries of 7, 69 and 60 yards.
“He’s an All-American,” Summerville coach John McKissick said of his featured back.
Bluffton was outscoring its opponents 497-100 but Summerville held the Bobcats scoreless in the first half to take a 21-0 lead into the break.
In the third quarter, Bluffton started making the big plays its fans are used to and Summerville found itself in a fight for the championship.
“I feel good about the win but they aged me by about 10 years the last couple of minutes,” McKissick said. “We let them get back in it, but I’m glad we beat a good team. I’m happy for our kids. They believed they could win so they worked hard in practice all week and it paid off tonight.”
The Summerville defense gave up some big plays as Bluffton quarterback C.J. Frazier passed for more than 400 yards and three touchdowns. But the Wave D also made some big plays, sacking Frazier seven times and making four other tackles in the backfield.
Summerville DB Darin Smalls made two interceptions. The first he returned 40 yards to set up a TD run. He made the second in the end zone to prevent a Bluffton score with 2:14 remaining in the final quarter.
“Coach McKissick kept telling us to keep fighting and not worry about what happened the first half of the season,” Smalls said. “We knew we had lost to some very good teams so we just focused on the rest of the season. It feels really good to win the region and we are looking forward to the playoffs.”
Bluffton received the opening kickoff and drove to midfield. Then Summerville lineman Kawuan Cox set the tone for the game by making his first of four-and-a-half sacks on the night. The tackle forced Bluffton to punt from its won 40-yard line.
Summerville capitalized by driving 60 yards to score on a seven-yard run by Anderson.
The teams exchanged some punts until Smalls made the next big play.
He picked a Frazier pass and dashed 47 yards into the end zone. However, an official ruled he stepped out at the 7.
Two plays later, Jerod Tucker scored on a one-yard dive into the end zone.
After a Green Wave defensive stand resulted in Beaufort turning the ball over on downs, Summerville needed only three plays to cover 75 yards and score again. Anderson carried all there plays and capped the drive with his 69-yard TD run to put the Wave up 21-0 with 3:21 remaining in the first half.
Bluffton opened the third quarter with its own defensive stand to force a Summerville punt. The Bobcats then drove 68 yards to score on a 14-yard pass to Marquis Webber.
Early in the fourth quarter Frazier connected with Webber again for a 63-yard TD pass to pull the Bobcats within a touchdown.
But Anderson broke free for his 60-yard TD run on Summerville’s ensuing possession. The Wave then held Bluffton on its next possession and drove 60 yards to score on a 37-yard field goal by Parker Cleveland.
Bluffton kept fighting, driving 70 yards to score on a nine-yard pass. The Bobcats faked the PAT kick and instead scored on a conversion run for a 31-22 score. They then recovered an onside kick with 2:33 remaining to keep things interesting.
Bluffton drove to the Summerville 12 before Smalls made his second pick to end the Bobcats’ hopes of last-minute heroics.
