The Green Wave softball team finally got the win it has been waiting for.
On March 31, Summerville earned a 4-2 victory over Stratford to end a longstanding Knight winning streak in the series. The last time Summerville defeated Stratford was in 2004.
“The first time I ever coached against Stratford we beat them, but after that they always had our number,” Summerville coach Heather Tucker said. “Some of our games with them were blowouts but others were very close so it’s nice to finally get over the hump.”
Stratford entered the game at Goose Creek ranked sixth in the latest coaches association 4-A poll while Summerville is unranked. The Knights went ahead 2-1, but Summerville rallied to take a 4-2 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning. Stratford pushed a run across to cut the lead in half and had a runner on first base, but Summerville got out of the inning, and the game, without any more damage.
Malori Myers went the distance to pick up the win on the mound. She struck out six Stratford batters.
“Malori and her catcher, Kaitlyn Clark, both did a good job working together and keeping them off balance,” Tucker said.
Senior Tricia Sizemore led the Wave batters, going 3-for-3 at the plate. Summerville improved to 12-3 with the win and holds a 4-0 record in region play. Stratford dropped to 13-2. Tucker said the win came at a good time for her team.
“We had a tough game Monday and lost 2-0 to Northwood so to play a quality program like Stratford on their field and pull out a win in that atmosphere is great. The girls are pretty proud of themselves and they should be. It was a tight game that was tense until the end.”
