Neville Miller won his second consecutive Race for The Ark Saturday.
Miller, a WCIV-TV meteorologist from Mount Pleasant, finished the 11th annual Summerville 5K race with a 16-minute, 55-second time. The mark was a bit off his 15:44 time in 2009 that fell just shy of the course record, but it still earned him top honors for the 2010 event.
Mark Vedders of Summerville finished as the runner-up with a 17:14 time and Post and Courier fitness writer David Quick placed third with a 17:38 time.
Sheldon Fowler of Mt. Pleasant, with a 19:58 time, was the first female across the finish line. Stephanie Bratkovic of Mt. Pleasant placed second in the overall female division with a 20:16 time and Summerville’s Kelly Hazel placed third with a 20:43 mark.
This year 482 registered for the event, which also included a one-mile fun run, and 371 people finished the 5K.
“The race was a huge success and the weather was wonderful,” ARK Director Peg Lahmeyer said. “Trident Health System was our title sponsor for this year’s event, which helped provide needed funds to sustain the programs of The ARK for families living with Alzheimer's or a related dementia.”
Atlanta Bread Company beat out 15 other teams to win the 2010 Corporate Challenge trophy. This year, organizers added a Youth Challenge that drew boys’ and girls’ teams from Summerville High School and Pinewood Prep. SHS won the Challenge for both divisions.
The ARK provides family support services for families and individuals living with Alzheimer’s or a related dementia in a five-county area. Services include respite care, support groups, caregiver consultation, educational programs and resource referrals.
