A defensive back received the most prestigious award Thursday during the annual Green Wave Football Banquet held at SHS.
Senior corner back Matt White was named Summerville’s Most Valuable Player for the 2011 season.
“He is the clear choice,” Summerville assistant coach Steve Wilson said. “The vote wasn’t even close, nor should it have been.”
With White providing not only shutdown pass coverage but impressive run support as well, Summerville had one of the most respected defenses in the area last season. The Shrine Bowl athlete finished the year as his team’s leading tackler with 82 primary tackles and 31 secondary tackles. He also led the team in pass breakups with 11 and made three interceptions and three fumble recoveries. He forced two fumbles.
“Matt was outstanding during his entire three-year career with our varsity,” Summerville Head Coach John McKissick said. “He worked hard during practice and he played hard. With everything he did for our team, he had to be our MVP.”
School officials presented 11 other athletic awards plus team academic awards during the banquet. They also recognized each player, cheerleader, trainer and manager who was involved with the football program during the season.
The Wave team finished the 2011 season with an 8-5 record after being eliminated in the second round of the playoffs by Brynes.
