Summerville’s Chad Wood (r) defeated Lexington’s Walker Barfield in the 138-pound Lower State Championship match Saturday.

Summerville and Beaufort claimed the most Lower State wrestling titles last weekend, but Fort Dorchester qualified the most wrestlers for this weekend’s big event.

The South Carolina High School League individual Lower State wrestling championships were held at Fort Dorchester Feb. 17-18. Wrestlers placing in the top four for their weight class at the tournament qualify, along with the Top 4 from the Upper State tournament, to participate in the State Championships to be held at the Civic Center in Anderson Feb. 24-25.

Summerville and Beaufort wrestlers won three weight classes during the Lower State tournament. Claiming a Lower State title for Summerville were Jordan Wigger (120-pound class), Gavin Perkins (132) and Chad Wood (138).

Wigger is chasing his fourth straight individual state championship, something only two other Class AAAA wrestlers have done. Perkins qualified for last year’s state tournament, but didn’t earn a title, and Wood is a first-time qualifier.

Summerville’s James Sass claimed runner-up honors in the 106-pound class Saturday to also qualify.

Fort Dorchester qualified eight wrestlers for the main event.

Daquan Wilson earned a Lower State title at 152 and Myles Moultrie earned a title at 285. Other Fort wrestlers advancing to the state championships are Javon Jordan, who placed second at 113 Saturday, Daquan Buksha (3rd, 132), Cody Williams (3rd, 138), Austin Ziliak (3rd, 145), Joseph Hutchinson (3rd, 160) and Delton Wells (3rd, 220).

Wilson and Jordan are chasing their second state championship. Moultrie and Williams are also returning qualifiers while Ziliak, Buksha, Hutchinson and Wells are making their first trip to the state finals.

Lexington, White Knoll and Beaufort all qualified seven wrestlers for the state tournament. Stratford qualified six and Ashley Ridge qualified four.

Swamp Fox wrestlers advancing are Xavier Sierra (2nd, 170), Christian Cuttino (4th, 132), Zack Armstrong (4th, 152) and Joseph Pringle (4th, 182). All four are making their first trip to the Class AAAA finals.
