Danville, Va. – The MINI of Charleston Racing team had a couple of firsts, even though they didn’t win either of the two National Races in April at the 3.27-mile Virginia International Raceway.
With Robbie Davis in second place in the South East Division national series points, it was important for him to not loose ground to class leading Mike Scornavacchi of Manheim, Pa. The double national gave Robbie the opportunity to cut into Mike’s slim lead with a points race both Saturday and Sunday.

The Charleston Juniors National Red 15 recently won the Palmetto Region volleyball championships in Charlotte, N.C. to qualify for the National Junior Olympic volleyball championship in Dallas, Texas.
This is the second consecutive year that this all-star team has qualified and participated in the national championships. Last year, the team traveled to Minneapolis, Minn. and finished 17th in the nation. The team is a composite of the top volleyball talent in the Tri-County area in their respective age group and is represented by players from Summerville, Berkeley, Ashley Hall, Porter Gaud, Northwood’s Academy and Bishop England high schools.

For the third consecutive year, Chris Asbell was the overall winner. Asbell finished with a two-day round of 143 to keep possession of the title. Runner up was Jim Mutispaugh with a 151. Third place went to Summerville High School golfer Michael Goodwin, who finished at 153. The President’s Cup winner (low net) went to Leonard Potvin.

The Moncks Corner Lions Club’s sixth annual Josh Swicord Memorial Golf Tournament is scheduled for May 17 at Berkeley Country Club. The four-person Captain’s Choice tournament will have a shotgun start at 9 a.m. Prizes will be awarded for low gross, low net and closest to the pin. The entry fee is $50 for BCC members and $60 for non-members and covers green fees, carts, food, beverages, awards and mulligans. The deadline for entry is May 15. Mike Fulkerson has passed on, but his legacy remains at Gahagan Park.
Town of Summerville officials and softball players alike showed their appreciation for Fulkerson Saturday during the second annual Friends Helping Friends benefit softball tournament held at the Jerry Blackwell Athletic Complex at Gahagan Park. Over the last several years, Fulkerson has had a hand in many of the benefit softball tournaments held at the park. Before his passing earlier this month, he helped organize approximately six benefit tournaments each year, including the Friends Helping Friends tournament, which he founded.

Ray Smith’s Tae Kwon Do earned 111 medals en route to earning its 18th state Tae Kwon Do championship.
Earlier this month, 51 students from the dojo competed in the 40th annual South Carolina State Tae Kwon Do Championships at E.L. Wright Middle School in Columbia on Saturday. Several athletes from the area who have moved into the college ranks are doing quite well there.
For the third straight season, USC Aiken catcher Jessica Strickland has been named to the Peach Belt All-Conference softball team. The junior was recently named to the 20-person team, becoming only the second person in school history to be named to three all-conference teams.

Charleston Twisters boys gymastics team members Chase Parmley, Justin Dandridge, Andrew Munz, Austin Benton, Ben Rindge, Daniel Morgan, Ian Neuhas and Joshua Smith had a solid outing at state meet.

The Summerville Soccer Club Spirit U12 Girls won the AFC Lightning Spring Challenge in Atlanta March 30-31.
The Spirit went 4-0, scoring a total of seven goals while allowing none. On Saturday, the Spirit started things off against Lady Cannons with a 2-0 victory. The Spirit then faced Atlanta Fire United Bronze and again won 2-0.

For years the Summerville Soccer Club and Carolina Elite Soccer Academy out of Greenville have been rivals, particularly when it comes to the higher levels of youth soccer. A recent decision by the SSC Executive Committee has some speculating that might change.
Last week, the all-volunteer committee that governs the club voted to turn over management of the SSC to Pearse Tormey and Andrew Hyslop, managers for CESA. Club president Bill Ford says the move should dramatically increase the depth and scope of youth soccer services the club can provide.

Summerville driver Robbie Davis continued his dominance at Road Atlanta in March by winning his third straight SCCA National series race at the 2.5 mile 12 turn Road Atlanta Raceway.
Davis’s 2005 MINI Cooper S has been on the podium every race this season, but didn't get to stand on the top step this year until the March race. Davis finished second at Sebring International Raceway, third at Carolina Motorsports Park and second at Roebling Road Raceway, taking second place in the division standings in the process. During he latest race, Davis was determined to keep his streak alive and not let Mike Scornavacchi of Manheim, Penn. get another Southeast Division win.

The Summerville Family YMCA gymnastics team had an impressive showing at the USAG Level 4-5 South Carolina Championship meet March 14-16.
This year three members of the Y team won the all-around competition for their division and three others finished as the runner-up for their division. The Y Level 4 team placed fifth out of 20 teams and the Y Level 5 team placed 10th.
