The Wolverines improved to 11-5 on the year with a 4-1 record in the region with a 14-25, 25-20, 25-16, 25-18 win over the Swamp Foxes. Bishop England (11-3, 3-0), which already has a win over Woodland, sits on top of the region standings. Ashley Ridge (4-7, 2-3) is in third place.
The Swamp Foxes had a strong start Tuesday, getting multiple kills from Hayley Trodglen, Amanda Carey, Savannah Lax and Lauren Egbert and a pair of service aces from Paige Deschaine to win the first game. However, Woodland’s Angel Elmore killed the Ashley Ridge momentum by leading the Wolverines on an 8-point run early in the second game.
Heather Hill earned a side out for the Wolverines in the game to break a 3-3 tie. Bobbie Blake made a block for a point and then Elmore mixed five service aces with a kill to put Woodland up 11-3.
The Wolverines then easily bagged the game. The Foxes put up a good fight in the final pair of games, but the Wolverines continued to perform well at the service line and on the attack.
Sharetha Benefield led the way for Woodland, finishing the match with 12 kills and an ace. Elmore had six aces and five kills and Hill had five kills and five aces. Blake was a force at the net, making six blocks, including two for points. She also made four kills.
Trodglen finished with 10 kills for the Foxes and four blocks, including three for points. Carey had nine kills and Lax had four kills and a block for a point.
