On Sept. 4 it became the first Ashley Ridge team to earn a varsity win when it downed Colleton County. On Monday, it will become the first Swamp Fox team to ever compete in a playoff game. The team of freshmen and sophomores earned a No. 3 seed for the playoffs by finishing 4-4 in Region 6-AA. They will travel to face Wade Hampton, Region 5-AA’s No. 2 seed, Monday in the opening round of the playoffs.
“I’m so proud of this group of girls for having made the playoffs as a first-year team,” Ashley Ridge coach Chi-Chi Hurley said. “At the beginning of the year I felt like we had the talent and ability to be a playoff team so I was hoping. The girls are really excited about it and I think we should at least give Wade Hampton a good game, if we don’t win.”
The Foxes put the explanation point on their season Tuesday by handing Garrett Tech a 25-9, 25-19, 25-17 loss. The win improved the Foxes’ record to 7-8 on the year. Hurley attributes the success of the young team to solid defense and communication.
“Our blocking could be better, but our strength is defense,” she said. “They also work well together on the floor. They talk to each other and that has resulted in better play. We’ve improved a lot this season. Paige Deschaine and Hayley Trodglen have become strong hitters; Elizabeth Johnson and Savannah Lax have developed as setters; and everyone else has also improved. I feel good about the future of this team.”
Ashley Ridge doesn’t stand to have a home playoff game until the third round and that would only be possible if there are a couple of upsets in the first two rounds.
