From left, Clayton Thornton, Josh Taylor and Sebastian Tillman will compete with the Green Wave 4x800 relay team this weekend as it tries to bring home a state title.
Track and field athletes from Summerville and Fort Dorchester high schools will compete for state titles today and tomorrow.
During the Lowerstate qualifying meet May 3, the Green Wave qualified athletes to compete in 11 events (7 boys and 4 girls) during this weekend’s Class 4-A/3-A state championship meet. The Patriots qualified athletes in six events, all on the girls’ side.
Cheering by members of the Summerville soccer team wasn’t enough to lift the Fort Dorchester boys over Beaufort.
At the beginning of the season, coaches in Region 8-AAAA speculated about how the competition in their region would likely rival that of any other region in the state. The competition did turn out to be stiff, so stiff in fact that the playoff seeding for the top four teams in the region, which last week were all ranked among the top 11 teams in the state, came down to a single kick.
Patriots claim first region golf title

The Fort Dorchester golf team won its first Region 8-AAAA championship last week.
Over the past few years, the Patriots have been easing up on Summerville, which has won six out of the last 12 titles. Last year during the region championship at Wescott, the Patriots nearly upset the Green Wave, but fell two strokes shy. On April 24, the Fort finally toppled Summerville, shooting a 36-hole 622 to win the 2008 region championship match at Shadowmoss Plantation Golf Club.

The Fort Dorchester High School girls’ soccer team officially retired Cassidy Pendley’s jersey number April 25. Members of the team present Pendley’s jersey to her mother, Lisa Bonadonna Everet (left), during a ceremony in honor of the four-year varsity soccer player and cheerleader. The 2007 FDHS graduate and USC freshman was one seven college students who perished in an early morning fire last October at an Ocean Isle Beach, N.C. home.
Fort advances with extra-inning win over Wando
Fort Dorchester first baseman Jessica Rabun hit a solo homerun Tuesday to help lift the Patriots over Wando.
Fort Dorchester broke a 4 and ½ inning stalemate Tuesday to hand Wando a 5-4 loss and advance to the District 6 finals in the Class AAAA softball playoffs.
After Patriot first baseman Jessica Rabun knotted the game at 4 with a solo home run in the bottom of the third, neither team scored for nearly five innings. Wando put a runner on in the top of both the seventh and eighth, but failed to capitalize.
Softball playoffs
Fort Dorchester senior Alaska Massenburg takes off from second.
The Fort opened the 4-A playoffs last week with a 5-0 win over Ridgeview and then lost 9-0 to South Florence in the second round. On Monday, the Patriots game with Wando, which fell 12-3 to South Florence, was postponed due to heavy rain. Summerville opened the playoffs with a 19-0 win over Dutch Fork, but has had its second-round game with Stratford postponed twice due to rain. On Monday, the game was called in the bottom of the fourth inning with no score.
Fort tennis team makes history
Fort Dorchester senior Gordon Wiesnet returns a volley Tuesday.
The Fort Dorchester boys’ tennis team will host its first home playoff match April 29.
The Patriot boys downed Battery Creek 7-0 Tuesday to clinch the No. 2 seed for Region 8-AAAA for the first time. Since Hilton Head was reclassified as a 3-A school several years ago, the region has been dominated by Beaufort and Summerville, which recently clinched its second consecutive region championship. Fort coach Scott Campsie sees this year’s finish as a milestone.
Rebuilding year comes to a close
Fort Dorchester senior Josh Orth slides into second for a stolen base Thursday.
A Patriot streak that spanned a decade was broken Thursday with a loss to Colleton County.
The Patriots’ baseball team had a chance to finish the season on a positive note, but came up short as the Cougars earned a 12-8 victory in North Charleston. A Fort win would have earned the Patriots a playoff birth. The loss means that for the first time since 1997, the year the Fort moved up to Class AAAA ball, the Patriots will not make the playoffs.
Fort girls are in the mix
Fort Dorchester senior Karleen Paulin (No. 2) pushes up field.
The Fort Dorchester varsity soccer teams picked up big wins last week, including three shutouts.
The Fort girls now need only a single win in their final three games to clinch a playoff spot. With a 7-0 mark in region play, Summerville is the front runner for the region crown, but the Lady Patriots are still mathematically in the running, as is West Ashley, which like the Fort holds a 5-2 record in region play. Unless there are some major upsets this week, the Pats and Wildcats will fight for the No. 2 spot in the region, which is accompanied by home-field advantage in the first round of the playoffs.
Inked
Fort Dorchester High School senior Dwayne Scales
Last week, Fort Dorchester High School senior Dwayne Scales (front), signed a national letter of intent to play football for Newberry College. The Indians recruited Scales as a running back/linebacker. During his senior season with the Patriots, Scales led the team in rushing with 1,216 yards on 179 carries to earn all-region honors. He scored 15 touchdowns and also had seven receptions for 86 yards. Scales was also a member of the 2007 Patriot wrestling team that won a state title and is a member of the Patriot track and field team. Also pictured are (back, l to r) Elwanda and Leon Scales and Fort Athletic Director/Football Coach Steve LaPrad.
Patriots' softball team has explosive week
Senior Robbie Rice pitched two shutouts this week and was a force both at the plate and on the base paths.
The Patriot softball team sandwiched two shutouts around a win over Summerville this week to stay alive in the hunt for the region crown.
The shutouts were over Beaufort and West Ashley, but what really has the Fort Dorchester team excited is the 5-4 victory it earned over crosstown rival Summerville Tuesday. After a disappointing start this season, the win was exactly what the Fort needed. Now the Fort, Summerville and Colleton County each have a region loss.
Promising soccer match slated for Friday
Fort Dorchester goal keeper Zach Davis has been in on five shutouts this season.
Teams loaded with playmakers go head-to-head at McKissick Field this week.
The Green Wave boys' soccer team hosts Fort Dorchester at 7 p.m. Friday. Both teams feature college prospects and began their year by winning six of their first seven games. The sole loss for both came at the hands of  West Ashley, making the approaching showdown even more important.
Wave rallies to down Fort
Pat Dolan pitched six innings in relief Saturday to pick up the win for Summerville.
The Green Wave baseball team overcame a 3-1 deficit to Fort Dorchester Saturday to put itself in the driver's seat for the region.
The game began Wednesday, but was postponed in the top of the second inning due to rain with the Patriots ahead 2-1. The Fort extended its lead shortly after play resumed Saturday and remained ahead until the bottom of the sixth. In the end, however, the Patriots made too many errors against a team with a solid batting lineup.
Rival games postponed
Tyler Veronee pitched four innings and allowed no runs to help Summerville pick up a big win over Colleton County Monday.
It seemed as if Mother Nature was looking down upon the Green Wave and Patriot teams and smiling, but apparently she isn't such a baseball fan after all.
As game time approached Wednesday for the cross-town rival games for the Summerville and Fort Dorchester baseball and softball teams, rain clouds moved into the area. A downpour overcame North Charleston, causing the softball teams to postpone their games.
A hard HIT for Dorchester teams
Cory Drawdy hit five doubles in a two-day period for Summerville last week.
Everything didn't go Summerville's way during the 39th annual Hanahan Invitational Tournament, but things certainly seemed to line up in the Wave's favor toward the end.
None of the Dorchester varsity teams made bracket play this year, but coaches say they faced some good competition during the HIT and should be better off for it now that they have returned to region play. Summerville turned in the best local performance in the tournament, which featured 30 varsity teams from all over.
