Rival games postponed

It seemed as if Mother Nature was looking down upon the Green Wave and Patriot teams and smiling, but apparently she isn't such a baseball fan after all.

As game time approached Wednesday for the cross-town rival games for the Summerville and Fort Dorchester baseball and softball teams, rain clouds moved into the area. A downpour overcame North Charleston, causing the softball teams to postpone their games.

The Summerville baseball diamond, the site of the Green Wave/Patriot baseball games, remained relatively dry, despite heavy rains falling in practically every direction surrounding the field. The varsity baseball teams took to the field in hopes of putting the rivalry game behind them, but ultimately, Mother Nature didn't cooperate. With the Fort ahead 2-1 in the top of the second inning, a heavy rain swept across the field, causing officials to postpone the game.

The baseball and softball teams left hoping to pick up the games on Thursday. However at press time, rain was in the forecast that evening. If the games were postponed again, they could be rescheduled for this weekend or next Tuesday.

The schools did squeeze in the junior varsity baseball game. Summerville dominated the contest to earn an 18-1 win in five innings after the game was called due to the 10-run mercy rule.

Hoot Gibson got the win on the mound after surrendering only two hits and no earned runs in four innings of work on the mound. He struck out six Fort batters while walking only one. Alston Edwards closed the game for Summerville and allowed four hits and no runs.

Offensively, Michael Goss and Gabe Craven had two hits and an RBI each and Corley Bridges hit a two-run homer. The Wave JV improved to 15-2 on the season with the win.

The conclusion of the varsity baseball game, whenever it was/will be reached, will have huge implications on the Region 8-AAAA standings. Summerville entered Wednesday's game with a 9-6 record, including a perfect 4-0 standing in the region.

On Monday, the Wave handed the other top region title contender, Colleton County, a 17-9 loss in Walterrboro. The Cougars dropped to 3-1 in region play with the loss. Trailing in the region standings as of Thursday morning were Fort Dorchester (2-2), West Ashley (2-3), Battery Creek (1-3) and Beaufort (0-4).

"That was a big win for us," Summerville coach Burt Bazzle said. "We were the first team in the region to get four wins so naturally we're happy about that going into the second half of the region schedule."

Against Colleton, Tyler Veronee pitched four innings and allowed no runs to pick up the win. Summerville had 18 hits in the game while only giving up nine to the Cougars. Grant Williamson, Brett Wheeler and Zach Dibble all went 3-for-5 at the plate. Jacob Webb was 2-for-5 with six RBIs and Aaron Bouronich was 2-for-5 with four runs scored and he reached base in each at bat.
