The game began Wednesday, but was postponed in the top of the second inning due to rain with the Patriots ahead 2-1. The Fort extended its lead shortly after play resumed Saturday and remained ahead until the bottom of the sixth. In the end, however, the Patriots made too many errors against a team with a solid batting lineup.
"I have to hand it to them, their pitcher kept us off balance and we are a pretty aggressive group," Summerville coach Burt Bazzle said. "It was good pitching on their part, but we finally got to them."
Through five innings, it looked as if Patriot sophomore Brandon Jones was headed toward a win, but the pitcher ran into trouble in the bottom of the sixth before being relieved.
Aaron Bouronich led off the bottom of the frame with a single and then the Patriots made back-to-back fielding errors to set up runners on the corners. Tyler Fletcher drove in Bouronich with a sacrifice fly and then Tyler Veronee hit a double to plate Zach Dibble and tie the game at 4-all.
It was three-up-three-down for the Patriots in the top of the seventh, setting up a game-winning hit by Summerville's Jacob Webb. Pat Dolan led off the bottom of the frame with an infield single. Catcher Brett Wheeler then singled and both base runners advanced a base on a Patriot error. Webb came to the plate and drove in a pinch runner for the 5-4 Wave win.
"I was looking for a fastball, but he threw me an outside curve so I just extended and hit it," Webb said.
Dolan pitched six innings in relief for Summerville to pick up his fourth win of the season against one loss. He also picked up an RBI in the first inning when he plated Branden Millhouse, who led Summerville off with a triple. Millhouse also had two infield singles in the game.
"Pat has done an outstanding job in relief this year," Bazzle said. "We figured he was probably the right guy to throw to them. Other than that, I think the story is Jacob Webb. He hasn't played at third much this year because he filled in for our catcher when he was sick and he made some plays tonight. Of course, he also had the game-winning hit."
Fort Dorchester junior Chris Vaughn led all batters in the game, going 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs.
Summerville improved its record to 11-6 with a 6-0 mark in the region. Fort Dorchester dropped to 2-3 in region play.
