The Pinewood Prep varsity basketball teams swept the Dolphins of Hilton Head Prep Jan. 20.
The Panther boys defeated Hilton Head 98-55 on a night highlighted by senior Jerome Deas scoring his 1,000th career point early in the second quarter. Deas finished the game with 14 points and was one of five players for Pinewood who finished with double figures. Sophomore Keith Pinckney had 23, Byron Turner had 19, Reid Radebaugh had 18 and Austin McCray 17 to lead the Panther attack.
In other statistical categories, Pinckney had nine assists. Deas and Radebaugh finished with three steals each and McCray pulled down nine rebounds. Pinewood shot the ball extremely well from outside, knocking down 12 three pointers. Radebaugh went 4 for 6; Turner went 3 for 6; Pinckney went 3 for 7; and Deas went 2 for 5.
Coach Pat Eidson had nothing but praise for his team’s effort.
“Hilton Head Prep has a new coach this year who has a philosophy of pressing full court no matter the score or the situation,” Eidson said. “We were able to handle their press and get some easy baskets as well as to find people for some good looks from three. We stayed aggressive from the start to the end.”
Eidson also had high praise for his senior captain, Jerome Deas, who has been a three-year starter for Pinewood.
“Jerome has had a great high school career at Pinewood and has shown great leadership this year in helping the team to 13-5 record and a 4-0 region mark,” the coach said.
Deas is the 11th Pinewood player who has reached the milestone of scoring 1,000 points under Eidson’s tenure. Deas scored his 1,000th point in the same season that Eidson reached the milestone of notching his 700th coaching win.
“This is such a great achievement for Pat,” Pinewood Athletic Director Nancy Beatty said. “It just shows what an incredible program he has built here at Pinewood.”
The Lady Panthers secured a relatively easy win over Hilton Head Prep the same night. They beat their region opponent 78-22.
With only two minutes of the game played, Pinewood was winning 11-0. This set the tone for the rest of the game. By the end of the first quarter the Panthers were up 33-2. Beatty, who is also the head coach for the Pinewood girls, was able to clear her bench once again.
By halftime the score was 48-8 in Pinewood’s favor and the game was out of the Dolphins’ reach. The leading scorer for the Lady Panthers was Junior Bri Boyd with 20 points. Following close behind were Maria Corella with 14 and Katelyn Dambaugh with 10.
