ìMarley and Meî by John Grogan, the book choice for One Book Berkeley, was the inspiration for Sangaree Intermediate Schoolís first dog walk, held Feb. 9 at the school. Fifty-two dogs entered the walk and brought 116-plus people with them.

Judges for the event included Ramona Grimsley of the Berkeley County Libraries, and representatives from SPCA and Petsmart. Categories for judging included the hairiest, biggest, smallest, best walker on a leash, best groomed, loudest and most fit.

A variety of breeds were represented including a rescued greyhound, owned by Jay George and his daughter, Harley, a student at SRI. Dash, a three-year old greyhound, was rescued from a dog track in Martinsville, WV. George said he worked through a rescue organization, Greyhound Crossroads.
